In the cold before the gearbox has warmed up it crunches going into gear sometimes, not all the time though. Clutch all the way down. What could this be? Its got ATF in it which was recommended on here. LT77 Box.

Actually come to think of it I'm not convinced ATF is the fluid for the box. Its much thinner than 80W90, I'm not sure how much this would effect its lubricating properties but I'd imagine it would heat up faster and reach a higher temperature.

LT77's are known for there notchiness when cold, i've had two and both had to be eased into second gear the first few times on a cold morning.

ATF is correct, or rather it was the specified lubricant- I believe Landrover then specced up some better (and more pricey) stuff at a later date. MTF? The transferbox on a 90/110/Defender will still use EP90 though.

Lots of people say the MTF stuff improves the shift, although i have never tried it.

Can anyone chip in with what its actually called?

I remeber reading on a Rover SD1 forum that alot of people were using Mobile1 in their gearboxes......some threads below although I can find the original post which had a very knowledgable guy who worked in the oil business.....

Yes, ATF Dexron II is recommended, though I would rather use synthetic Dexron III, MTF94 if you can find it, or Redline MTL or Castrol Transmax Z. Also the Difflock oil which is similar though not on sale here. The last three oils are quite expensive, though you don't have to change them very often, if at all.
