07 Defender 2.4 non starting problem

Local farmer/neighbour rung me today looking for help.

07 'Puma' 90 with 18000 miles.

Over the past couple of months the vehicle has developed an intermittent starting fault. The truck will either start, run for a few seconds and then dies or it just refuses to turn. Usually leaving it five minutes will 'cure' the fault but the non starting is happening more frequently now. Local Land Rover dealer has had two attempts at curing it but says it can find no fault with the vehicle. Dealer says it has been in touch with Solihull and it's 'not a known problem'. Three days after last dealer visit it failed to start. It's just done it again today - that's when he called me to ask whether i'd heard of anything similar. I haven't but wondered whether anyone on here had...?? FWIW. Another farmer has told him his 'Puma' 90 does the same occasionally but the leave it 5-mins trick works for him.

Anyone else experienced/heard of this one?

Kev if you have a look on Defender2.net. I seam to recall a tread there about this issue, something to do with the immobilizer.

Have seen this on a few, they will turn over, start and then die within half a second. Will then refuse to crank (or only crank for tiny period - not enough to start).

Lock, then wait for the imobiliser light to to change from fast flash to slow flash. Unlock should now start.

It may be a common fault for farmers, who tend to leave the keys in the car, which can confuse the immobiliser, apparently.

That sounds a little short sighted of Landrover considering their target market for Defender. I guess it means it meets Thatcham standards or some such.

Its the same immobiliser unit as per late 300Tdi Defender, and all Td5 Defenders. Its' got a 10AS unit in the same place behind the instrument cluster.

I wonder if it just needs the 10AS settings just need changing to a basic spec? - has the farmers 90 got an alarm key fob etc etc?

The one Puma I was playing with in Greece, was set for the immobiliser and alarm to automatically set itself after a period of time (which meant all of the doors locked themselves)... even with the keys still inside!!! (not in the ignition). The settings were soon changed! ;)

Cheers guys. Forgot to mention in my inital post that he'd sussed it was an immobiliser problem. Love the fact that the dealer and LR (if the dealer ever bothered to call them) are baffled by this seemingly unheard of problem!

The dealer hadn't suggested the remove the key, lock, unlock, procedure. I know he's tried this but whether he did it in the correct manner or was just randomly pushing the buttons without paying attention to the dash light I don't know.

Ian. What effect will resetting the immobiliser to 'standard' settings have? He did say having the immobiliser was pain a sometimes because whenever he has a couple of collies in the back he has to remember to lock it with the key to prevent the immobiliser/alarm kicking in.

Dealers idea of a fix was to keep it for three days. 'Your car is ready sir. It's started everytime we've tried it.'

Yeah but have you 'fixed' or changed anything?

I doubt that was the dealers idea of a fix, more an attempt to diagnose. If it is an intermitant fault and you cannot replicate it how can you find and fix it?

If it were a transit i would say it was a software problem. Likely solved by an update. But hey... thats a transit.

As per a Td5, it can be set to 'basic' base spec... so no real immobilser. As long as the ECU see's the matched 10AS then it will start....

You can unplug the ultra sonic sensor etc etc, but not sure if you deselect options whether the central locking will still work.

I'm sure there is no difference in the 10AS unit used.... but I haven't messed with alarms on many Puma's.

Ohh no it won't...

I know of a Puma vehicle here with the "problem" which is configured as non alarm non immobiliser - as most are for this market. The switch off and leave it trick apparently works every time but there's clearly a gremlin in the works somewhere. The other one I know of with the problem is a County with alarm/immob.

There is an obscure SSM (Special Service Message) covering it which for reasons known only to Land Rover does not show up when you do a search for it in GTR. Doesn't tell you how to fix it just tells you to advise the customer to switch it off an on again. Guess it came from the Microsoft helpdesk :rolleyes:

Yes that sounds familiar. Mine does it from time to time - normally when I am in a hurry which is a PITA. Locking and then unlocking the truck with the remote usually fixes it. Mentioned it to the service manager at the local stealer when I dropped it off for some waranty work, who confirmed that he was aware of several other vehicles with the same problem. Apparantly the worshop  "checked" the imobiliser settings and found nothing amiss - the problem is still there though :rolleyes:

I was wondering if there was any further development to this discussion thread?

I have exactly the same situation. 2007 Puma 2.4 90 defender, farmer, usual mud filled  cab with muck everywhere, including a dirty ignition barrel. He had the problem before and reckons that somehow one of the local garages fixed a hot water switch enabling him to start the vehicle when the ignition barrel was broken.
 the barrel was then changed and the vehicle has worked for a few years until redeveloping this stop start fault as described in this thread

Before sending this vehicle off to a main Land Rover agent, I'm wondering if it's worth just replacing the ignition lock barrel with a complete new set? part number LR077438?

 Opinions, ideas?
