Are the Newark organiserers desperate for trade stands?

Or are LRO and LRM just using normal business tactics to attract both trade stands and visitors to their respective shows?

Lets face it LRM and LRO are in competition on a monthly basis and are now in competition by having a show on the same weekend. Both LRM and LRO will make business decissions in what they consider to be in their respective best commercial interest.

Let the magazines/trade/visitors make their own minds up about which if any show/s to organise and attend.

My decision is NOT to attend any show this year as a fee paying visitor.

Regards

Brendan

Looking at that list it seems to be composed primarily of clubs and unrelated companies and I can't see many of the companies I normally visit on that list.

I'm kind of tempted by "Dead Cert Pest Control" though if only out of morbid curiosity :)

Talking to traders at Donington I got the impression that Newark was already more expensive than Billing for the same size stand so a 20% discount doesn't seem that good. I was told a stand at Newark would cost £1000 whereas the same size stand at Billing was £650 a 20% discount wouldn't close that gap although the stand cost is a minor part of the expenditure for a trader I suppose.

I've also been told that Live Promotions are discounting their trade stands heavily too, maybe traders shoud try and get their stand at half price, play the two off against each other and book both !

Leeds, sorry to single you out - but you were the latest.

What is the point of posts like this? Who does it serve? Are you trying to persuade other people not go go to either? Will that help the trade, the organisers or even you?

What response would you expect if you posted something like "I don't own a land rover - i'm not interested in them - and never will be". People would wonder why then you were posting on a Land Rover forum? Same goes for a thread about which show to go to. If you are going to neither and don't really have anything to contribute to someone trying to decide which show they ARE going to attend - then you are just wasting bandwidth!

It looks increasingly likely that there will be two shows that weekend. I wish both the traders and visitors every success whichever they go to.

Thankfully the two shows are close enough together that staying at one and visiting the other is possible. I believe that both camps are 75% likely to implement the idea above of a free day pass for the other show if you turn up at the gate and show your weekend pass for the other.

With something like that in place - the outlook is quite bright. Assuming I get the time, I intend visiting Newark just to say hi to my friends attending the other show.

Quote from Si. "I believe that both camps are 75% likely to implement the idea above of a free day pass for the other show if you turn up at the gate and show your weekend pass for the other".

Is there an agreement from both sides that this would be allowed then or is it still gossip with a "where's there's smoke there's fire" ring to it?

There are simply so many threads going around on different forums that I can't keep up with it. Maybe someone can give a definative answer to save me from reading every post on the net about it.

Thanks.

S.

Hi Simon,

We have 3 Land Rovers in our stable of vehicles and do use them for everyday vehicles, overland trips and attending local RTV events etc. I therefore think I have a right to post on Land Rover forums.

The main point of my post was that someone asked the question were LRO desperate for visitors to the Billing Show by their latest marketing gambit. I pointed out that LRM are doing a marketing gambit by extending a 20% discount offer on trade stands. Are LRM desperate to get traders to Newark?

Personally I think LRM showed a lack of business wisdom by pulling out of Billing AND not ensuring that another Land Rover show could take place at Billing on that weekend. Especially due to the events of two years ago.

I believe that ALL LR show organisers need to put effort into getting ex show attendees to return to attending shows again. Personally I think the majourity of shows are too expensive (event/camping/off road fees/beer/hot food/fuel etc) and are too 'samey' I would personally rather put my money into my vehicles/trips.

I will not be attending any major shows as a fee paying visitor in the foreseeable future for the reasons outlined above. However it is possible I may be at one or more shows as a 'hired friend' .

LRM and LRO have made a business decision about the shows, however it has caused some problems for the traders and the traders will have to make a business decision in their own best interests. At least one trader has made the decision not to attend either show if both run on the same weekend. That is their decisions. Yes, business decisions might change as events unfold.

I agree with you Simon when it comes to hoping that all the traders and visitors have an enjoyable and successful weekend.

What shows if any traders/visitors attend is up to them.

If the LR4x4 management decides that my contribution on this or any thread on LR4x4 is a waste of bandwidth then they have the power to do something about it.

Regards

Brendan

There is no agreement - but I have spoken to both organisers and both are looking at how best to implement it. Both have indicated that there is roughly 75% chance of it going ahead. As soon as one does it, it's very likely the other will follow.

Leeds - I'm not denying your or anyone else's right to post on a forum. I'm interested to see what the motivation is to post and tell everyone that you are doing nothing?

It puts me in mind of the "Judean Peoples Front Crack Suicide Squad" from Monty Python's Life of Brian.

"There - that show'd 'em"

Funny you should say that - just received this email from LRO:

LRO has been contacted recently by a number of people regarding the Billing Show in July. They had been given information stating there would be no show at Billing this year and so had purchased tickets, in good faith, for the Land Rover Max event at Newark on the same weekend. As there will be a show at Billing this year, on the 17-19th July, which LRO will be supporting, we thought it would be an appropriate gesture to offer a significant reduction on the ticket costs at Billing for those people who bought tickets for Land Rover Max under the wrong impression that Billing was not happening.

Therefore, anyone who has purchased adult tickets for Land Rover Max, who would rather go to the LRO Billing Show can send in their Land Rover Max tickets to Live Promotions

(the organisers of Billing) and those tickets will be substituted for LRO Billing Show tickets at a cost of only £5 each. LRO Billing Show tickets are normally £12 in advance.

This offer will only be open to Land Rover Max ticketholders who send in their tickets to Live Promotions at the address below by 5pm on Monday March 9th.

Post tickets to:

LRO Billing Show, Live Promotions Events Ltd, Riverside Quay, Double Street, Spalding, Lincolnshire, PE11 2AB, cheques payable to Live Promotions Events Ltd or put your telephone number and covering letter with the tickets in the post and Live Promotions will call you back for credit card payments.

Just a thought, will those people who have booked Newark actually have their tickets by the 9th March in order to do a trade-in?

I seem to recall that tickets are often not sent out immediately.

If this is the case the offer is of little value, other than the publicity is creates..

Billing it is for me I think!

To be honest I am more impressed by what is stated as going on there and the improvements that 'Live Promotions" are offering.

It was my 1st show at Billing last year, I really enjoyed myself. ok I know that this years is being supported by a different magazine, but that's ok with me and to be honest with any big show, there is going to be inherent problems with security and facilities etc. that's just as it is.

One other point, as Newark is in Lincolnshire and the police there are clamping down on Land Rovers etc, makes me nervous about heading to a show in the heart of a county where I might get stopped by the police wanting to look at my vehicle.

I think not, well I have not got mine yet. But I have not got the ones for Billing either as I have booked both :blink:

Or the shortened version.

Your reason for not attending either of the shows is you don't want to pay but are willing to try and get in for free.

And what's wrong with your vehicle that makes you 'nervous'....?

When my insurance and MOT have run out or i'm running with 4 bald tyres after 8 pints of Scrumpy, I get a bit nervous. But if nothing is broken and it's all legit, then i've got nothing to worry about.

The "Billing vs Newark" debate has been done to death here over the last few months,

and even worse on other forums (yes they do exist  )

Whilst people feel strongly sometimes about them, either way, some can feel so strong that things can get

blown out of all proportion and things / comments / positions can be taken which are later maybe regretted

having been done in the 'heat of the moment' - its been close here a few times

on this issue and as such we don't want or expect a 'repeat performance'.

So, I am locking this thread, as we will with any other Billing vs Newark future posts - frankly those who wish

to go to Billing will go there, those who wish to go to newark will go there,

and some will go to both - in all cases whatever floats your boat, lights your bulb or p**ses on your firework

but for LR4x4 and Billing vs Newark Squabbles, posts, threads, and views the subject is now closed :)

Any issues PM either me, or any of the A&M team

Amen
