minivin Posted February 21, 2006 Share Posted February 21, 2006 It all started quite innocently, found that my superwinch 525 was making nasty grating noises when I turned the shaft "that'll be the input worm bearing shot" Anyhoo, got one bearing out and that was ok "oh!", took the whole worm out and the other bearing was ok <grump>, turn the mainshaft and grating noise starts <mumble mumble> ar$e So I strip the cover off and inside of the outer taper bearing was a whole load of grit, so I pulled the load out and started cleaning it, at which point I found that the bearing I had ordered was actually for the mainshaft and not the worm screw, double ar$e! Having started cleaning the mainshaft and drive gear I'm not to happy with the bearing that was dirty and decide to replace it with my unlucky/lucky purchase, I break the bearing cage and get the rollers off and put the mainshaft into my vice t cut the race to remove it. As I'm cutting, the slitting disc shatters and flys off into my hand in all of the time of 0.5 seconds or something ludicruos, swift to turn the grinder off and in doors, hand under the sink and cleaned my hands before the pain started to set in (scrubbing open wounds is not top of my list of pleasureable experiences). I then had the sensation that I can only put down to being a mild case of shock kick-in, followed by panic as my parents had moved the first aid kit (I won't post what I thought on the matter at that moment), dad finally came into the kitchen while I was throwing cupboads open trying to find it and not try to bleed on stuff. Anyhoo, turns out to be a few mm's deep, but slanted so not actually that deep, gunno go out and tidy everything away and get a glass of wine or something stronger Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Well done Mark I once sat on a soldering iron (gas powered job) I got up faster than I sat down for sure. then smashed the iron with a hammer for good measure. made me feel a lot better. minivin Posted February 21, 2006 Author Share Posted February 21, 2006 Just found the parts to it, it either gripped suddenly or a chunk at one side broke away unexpectedly: Anyhow, couldn't be leaving the job half done, so picked up a cold chisel, a lump hammer and knocked the portion off I was trimming off, two whacks and that was off, and in the process a crack started down the middle, one more hit and it cracked fully. 99% of the time I luv grinders, but that 1% I don't when it bites me Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Too right - my angle grinder caught in a panel I was crouching in front of making a horizontal cut, I think the disc shattered or something, anyway, the remainer (still in the grinder) zipped across the surface and into the inside of my left calf. I could see all kinds of fibres and stuff - it REALLY opened out WIDE... It was no fun getting to casualty on my own. Now I'm Mr Safety. Funny stories though! Al. I removed my MK2escort gearbox on my own it dropped as the input shaft came out of the clutch fell onto the kerb stone, pity my hand was between the two blood poured through the grease, so I had to get up rang Val before we lived together she was going to collect me fr a trip to casualty but he r car wouldn't start so I had to get a bus to her house remove the spark plugs clean them and refit, it then started so off to the hospital we wnet for a couple of stitches. that was a good nights work.. similarly I helped a amate lower his MK2 we fitted lower springs and wired them in, I pulled the wire through the Macpherson strut the pliers slipped I hit myself above the eye which equalled: cut-unconciousness-revival-trip to hospital-stiches-home to finish the job around midnight. A couple of years ago I had to treat an unfortunate individual who was unlucky enough to have his 9" grinder bounce off a surface and hit him in the face - he had a severly cut jaw bone not to mention deep flesh cuts and shattered teeth. Very sobering it was I can tell you. I managed to stop the bleeding and strap him together untill the mobile intensive care unit (MICU) arrived to take the poor guy to the nearest ER - 40 mins away at break neck speed. My left index finger was opened from the knuckle to the first joint and I could see the tendon. Middle finger knuckle was completely exposed as well. It was fascinating watching the tendon working until it got too painful. A friend of mine was in the shed watching me, and a piece of grinder wheel hit him just above the eye and made a small cut, a little lower and he would have been blinded in one eye possibly. I also cut my wrist on the machined edge of an escort gearbox and ended-up with 4 stitches. The worst was in June 04 when I almost amputated the top of my second finger/left hand. My finger tip was hanging off and the bone was broken into three bits. It was so painful and I was so shocked that I suffered cardiac arrest in the ambulance. In the end it took almost a year to heal up. Considering how many Land Rovers I have repaired, it's very rare for me to injure myself on one. It was in the days before surgeons could reattach limbs. ps I hope you were wearing protective eyewhere and had the grinder disc shield postioned properly. Cutting disks cut via the edge, grinding disks grinds on the flat and the edge you may have caught the flat side of the disk but not known and then it ground itself down! I did this the other way round many years ago, tried cutting a S2 chassis up using a 9in grinder with a grinding disk.......it took so long........I only reaised it when I changed it!!!
