BigMac1
I want to paint my ally chequer plate. At the minute its plain, but i'd like it black. Whats the best way to 'key' it for paint, and would I be alright with a normal spray can? Cheers Mick
stuck
I think you would have to use a self etching primer first. I hope somebody sensible will be along soon to confirm or deny that!
Hamish Grundy
yes you need to put 1 coat of etch primer on first then top coat on to that, you can buy etch in spray tins although it isnt cheap. make sure you top coat is compatible with the etch else you will be peeling it all back off!! good luck
paintman
U-Pol do an aerosol etch primer called Acid#8. On ebay if you can't find it anywhere else. http://www.u-pol.com/countries/en/downloads/tds/acid8.pdf
smo
Definately use acid etch otherwise as said its a non starter, you might find using a scotchbrite pad will also help to key the surface before this for extra bonding.

Also I've used plasticote a few times and its brilliant paint. Cheers for all the input, Mick

You can do it yourself - although after reading this link I think I probably wouldn't bother!
paintman
ive tryed all they other ways of painting it and this way was the only way that worked for me as the jet wash still peeled all the paint off with etching primer no matter what i did Great way of removing paint. Lots of business from car owners using pressure washers at zero inches from the paintwork suddenly finding that a stone chip has allowed the jet to rip a big chunk of lacquer off. If its taking paint off its TOO CLOSE. About a meter (yard for us oldies) on paintwork is close enough.
