adam7370
hi i have an m reg 300 tdi that has just spectacularly failed its mot. the weldings no problem but i apper to have an alternator pully that is narrower than all the others, this causes the belt to shred. is there different widths of pully or has the wrong alternator been fitted
BogMonster
All the belts are the same width (7PK I think) but early ones are a different length however they shouldn't shred it is just too tight/too loose if you have the wrong belt fitted. Yours will probably be the early belt ERR3287/PQS000030 but the pulley should be the same width. The alternator pulley is smaller diameter on later vehicles to make the alt spin faster and thus charge better at idle.

I had the same sort of problem but tracked it down to the tensioner being slightly loose giving just enough play for the belt to ride over the lip thus causing it to shred. Good Luck.
