Phil Hancock
Does anybody know of a company that does 'Friction Welding', this is not the sort that arises from running a diff or whatever with no oil in it, but the joining of two parts(shafts) by spinning and pressure. As i am looking to get some halfshafts shortened for a project, they are not available comercially hence the question.
jjojjas
Don't know where you are mate, but these used to do props to any length to order and i'm sure that they used to shorten/join your own if supplied (although that was 10 year ago!) Commercial Propshaft Services Ltd 190, Kingsway South, Team Valley Trading Estate, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear NE11 0SH Tel: 0191 4821690 If there at the other end of the world to you you best look in yellow pages for "propshaft"? good luck Jas
FridgeFreezer
I think the usual practice is to get new halfshafts machined up, it's more of a US thing than over here so your best bet could even be ordering from the states. As for welding a shaft back together, no matter how good it is surely it must introduce a weak/stress point?
minivin
As for welding a shaft back together, no matter how good it is surely it must introduce a weak/stress point? Yeah, the localised heat change during the welding changes the granula structure of the item around the weld, normalising and shot peening helps to reduce any build up of stress in that area, but it will never be as good as it was originally
dirtydiesel
Give rakeway ltd a ring on 01538 750500. They will make new half shafts for you, for a damned good price as well.
