110 Self Levelling

Recommended Posts

Hi, Having had a look (well quite a few) underneath my 110 I see it has the self-levelling strut. So far we've managed to ignore each other. However the weight plate on the pedal box gives a gvw of 3050 kg, whereas I thought with self levelling it should read 2950. Could it have been fitted after manufacture? Is there any easy way of telling? Is self levelling a Good Thing or should I be considering its retirement? I was thnking I might fit new springs so presumably it would influence choice of those. I've no idea whether it's actually doing anything as I don't really carry much weight.

if the vehicle is a County station wagon then the GVW is 2950kg [same as my '89 CSW] IIRC other models with self leveling were 3050kg.

if the vehicle is sitting level or slightly nose down it's probably working, if the vehicle is sitting tail down [dragging it's bum] then the strut is dead & is just unuable weight. took mine off years ago & changed to decent weight carrying OME springs & dampers.

Yep, fairly easy, remove the top mount [4 bolts/nuts] complete with strut & the bottom, you have 2 choices

1. remove the existing axle ball joint while still attached to the strut

or

2, with a very slim spanner of the correct size, undo the thin nut that secures the bottom ball joint into the axle cup fitting, you can leave the cup part in place with no ill effects [did mine that way]

Thanks for that - Armed with that info I'll have another look, and pick the one that works - I think its going to be a struggle either way. I think I need to park it in a lake of Plusgas for a week. Cheers

I have a pair of Old Man Emu rear 110 springs 755's which are the Medium Duty rating 660lbs, for sale if you decide to upgrade.

They worked very well on my 110 CSW without self levelling.

Only done 4000 miles of light road work.

I have changed to heavy duty in preparation for an expedition.

Let me know if you are interested.

I will be in the N.West in early April
