removing the top plate from a 6 bolt steering box?

Recommended Posts

morning all,

can anyone tell me the best way to remove the top plate from my 6 bolt power steering box? i need to change over the top plates as my bleed nipple sheared of in the hole. I can get the 6 bolts out no probs but how do you remove the centre nut? and are there any special proceedures that need to be taken so as to not screw up the steering?

Make sure the steering is in the straight ahead position, undo and remove the lock nut, stick a 6mm (i think-might be 5mm) allen key into the adjuster, wind inwards and it should force the top plate off.

To reinstall-poke the allen key thru the top plate to wind the adjuster screw back into the plate and pull it back down into position, tighten the 6 bolts, have a helper waggle the steering wheel whilst you check the slack in the box/drop arm, alter the lash with the adjuster screw-tighten lock nut.
