NEW REAR CROSS MEMBER!

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

Going to replace the rear cross member on my 90, looking at the various suppliers i notice there are huge price differences ie Paddocks, Craddocks, mm4x4 etc .

Can any body tell me what make i should buy or are they all the same from all the suppliers  , has anybody had any fitting issues with parts from certain suppliers?.

Any info will be greatfully appreciated .

Cheers Guy.

Just helped in fitting one of these to a mates 110. Not a 90 I know but in terms of replacing very similar.

The new rear crossmember he bought from Paddocks, no real problem with it but we did reckon the steel was a bit on the thin side.

how hard it is to fit will very much depend on how far back along the chassis you have to cut to get back to good steel so you can get some good welds on. Although it can be done on your own it's easier with someone to hold it in place while you mark up and measure for the new one to go on.

Sorry! That's probably not much help at all.

If you can though try and get your hands on a galvy crossmember and give it a good old paint. cost you more but worth it as long as the rest of your chassis is good.

Hi there just thought i'd add my two pence worth on this subject

Just hgaving done mine this weekend just gone.

After much searching, comparing prices aswell as listening to horror stories!! i went for the d44 rear crossmember with winch tray, as i was gonna fit a rear winch aswell.

The guy who fitted mine has fitted a few & said it's the best fitting one he has ever done!! Lined up lovely & was fully welded & made from 6mm steel (so should last for ages) Old 1 off & new one fitted within 2 hours!!

They were on special from i think £590 down to £355 inc vat! (don't know if they still are??) I know it's alot of money but a freind fitted a britpart one last year which he had to do alot of making good on & gave it 6 coats of paint as well. but a year down the road & there's rust spot's comming through already?? not good :(

For a half decent standard one you are looking at about £200 delivered anyway's, so didn't think it was that much dearer!!

If you are thinking of a rear winch, too, can I suggest the North Off Road rear winch crossmember??.....

Very nicely made and can come with side extensions if you want them (for a little extra, of course), fits like a glove and is cheaper than the D44 one. When I bought mine it was approximately £300 cheaper, but I think D44 have seen the light and reduced the price of theirs...

The only drawback to the NOR one is the paint used. It's a right b#gger to clean up to weld!!

No connection, just a happy customer

WRT fitting, we cut my old one off and fitted the NOR one using the rear tub brackets and a stool that was conveniently the right height. No dramas and it's made big enough to slide over the existing chassis rails (as long as the chassis is good enough to keep) so you can puddle weld into the holes provided in the new extensions.

No Nick sold his welder ;) , getting mi Dad to do it next week along with a little welding on the chassis box section just behind the fuel tank , then i will get under there and give it all a good clean and wax oil. hopefully then i will be ready to do some of your drive arounds :D , im coming down with Les on the 11th for your next drive around ,looking forward to seeing you then.

Regards Guy.
