ashtray
alright chaps could anyone enlighten me as to which td5 defenders have the anti-stall feature much appreciated ash
BogMonster
all of them but all of them are carp yes it will take off up a hill without using the throttle if you are gentle, but in real world conditions every one I have ever driven (and I've driven all of them from 99MY to 06MY) would stall at the drop of a hat pulling out of a junction etc. Later ones were a little less worse. If you want to see real anti-stall check out a Puma, world of difference and genuinely very hard to stall especially in low range.
T1G UP
works ok in my 90. low range first gear crawls around all day. As for the stalling when pulling away, i let the clutch up before accelorating and have no problems.
BogMonster
As for the stalling when pulling away, i let the clutch up before accelorating and have no problems. Neither do I - but you have to consciously drive around it and surely the point of anti stall is exactly the opposite, i.e. it should work so that even if you cock up the take-off it will try very hard not to stall, like the Puma does. You've got to do a really lousy take off even on a hill to stall a Puma.
mickeyw
As for the stalling when pulling away, i let the clutch up before accelorating and have no problems. Could do this in our old 2.5 TD and the Tdi, but our 2006 110 CSW Td5 needs a very conscious effort to get the revs up before pulling away. F'kin fly-by-wire electronic anti-stall nonsense! Whatever happened to 'it does what it says on the tin'??? Give me a throttle cable and a governor any day.
Anderzander
Mine seems fine? I've stalled it on a steep climb off road - but never come near it on the road, however clumsy I've been.
Kev Baldwin
AFAIK, it was the post 02 Defenders that had the anti stall fitted as a response to feedback about the Td5's fondness for stalling. No doubt Ian, 'Porny' will be along soon to set me straight! LR did/does actually advocate the no throttle technique for pulling away in the Td5. It does work although nothing like as effective as the 'Puma' versions. I was told by a man at LR that the as soon as you touch the throttle it kills the Td5 anti-stall which explains why it's still easy to stall and anti-stall Td5! I think it's great technology. I had a Cummins engine truck with anti stall over ten years ago. Great for getting 40-tonnes moving from a standing start on a steep hill. SteveG
The anti-stall works on percentage of throttle actuation. Too little and it cuts anti stall but is not enough to pull away and it stalls. So you can pull away with revs but it needs to be positive and enough revs. I've found the anti-stall good in 1st low when crawling on rocks or into tricky sections. You can left foot brake and it won't stall and so you can control descents/ascents etc . It's probably why I need a new clutch at 46K though ;) Steve
