Andrew N
I've just bought a NATO hitch, but it turns out that what I've got is one of the bigger versions (7 tonne? 10 tonne?) which I believe are normally used on big trucks. Will it bolt up to a Defender rear cross-member or is it just too big and, Defender-wise, useless?
western
That one is far to big for a LR, it's meant for the Bedford/LeylandDAF 4 tonne 4x4 trucks & similar size vehicles. it's a 7.6tonne rated version, you need the 5tonne variant for a LR, normally lots on ebay. You need the pintle on the Left & you have the pintle on the Right. http://www.dixonbate.co.uk/towing/pintles.asp
Andrew N
Hmm... list price new, £346 inc VAT Thanks for the info - military vehicle folk have said the same thing. Back to square one...
BogMonster
Bolt pattern is different, I daresay you "could" fit it but you will never break the standard NATO and it is much easier to fit
Bluemoon
I've got the bigger pintle like the one you have bought , I cut the front off the bumper , drilled through , welded in reinforcement and welded a plate over the top. A bit more bother, but if you like that sort of thing , no bother at all Brian

Try to find someone to swap it for the Smaller one, I believe they will fit onto a lot of the Dixon Bate sliders which have the option of the square arrangement of holes (one of mine has but my other two have the rectangular arrangement). I would quite happily swap with you if you were more local. Colin.
Andrew N
Thanks for all the input on this. I now have the right one, and just to show the difference here's the two together:
