Aragorn
I'm wondering what exactly is required to install the difflock into a LT230Q from a Disco2. I know some of them its just a case of adding the linkage and jobs a goodun, but on some it requires some internal parts... Anyone got any info on this? Also, do these boxes require lots of special tools to rebuild like the R380, or is it a lot simpler? Cheers

Cheers You should be able to pick up a good transfer box off a 300tdi for about £100. Few bolts to change over and jobs sorted.
Aragorn
Yep, but the D2 ones arent too much more money (there were a few on ebay BIN for £130 last week) and they tend to have lower mileages on them... Plus the Q gears are probably a benefit both on noise and fuel economy.
jimmy_neutron
Strangely enough i was in a td5 disco this morning which had diff lock. I asked the guy how he had done it and he took me to another TD5 disco tranfer box that was on his floor, and showed me the linkage out of the top of the box. It seems that some of the disco 2 boxes have the ability to go into diff lock but it is just the linkage that prevents it. LR must of decided that traction control is better than diff lock for some reason. Thus the guy just bought the kit which is a LR part and fitted it and it gave him diff lock on a disco 2. He did say that he has also seen these boxes that didn't have diff lock at all though, but didn't know how to identify them appart other that just testing them with the linkage removed. The other thing is the LT230Q has a thicker case making it quieter .. but smaller bearings making it weaker. TBH i wouldn't do it.
Aragorn
erm the LT230Q doesnt have smaller bearings... The Landrover rebuild manual states it has both larger (Thicker?) bearings and gears, and that the quietness comes from the angle of the gear teeth and some other things. (i'll dig them out later) Some of them have the difflock fitted but no linkage as you say. All they need is the defender linkage bolted on and we're away. The later ones have no dog clutch inside the box and a blanking plate over the point at which the mechanism comes out. Ashcroft seem to have suggested to me that i can get the required parts to convert one of these later boxes from my existing transfer box. I'm just wondering if anyones had any experience with doing this job?
J@mes
IIRC LR removed the D/L due to customer feedback - people saying that they never used it. Then a few years after the TD5 was released they put it back in due to popular demand. Some boxes have it installed already and some dont. you can tell by getting under the vehicle and reaching around to the top of the transfer box - if you can feel the threaded rod poking out of the top then it is fitted and you just need the linkage, if not then you need a different box. Aragorn
well thats the point, ashcroft have told me i can swap some parts out of my standard defender LT230 to add the difflock internals to the D2 boxes that dont have the dog clutch and selector inside it, however i've no idea how much work this involves and what is required... i'm happy to give it a bash and swap the parts, but i'd like to have a reasonable idea of how difficult it is. I dont want to purchase a good D2 box then knacker it trying to fit the difflock dog clutch and selector!
Ex Member
It is cheapest just to buy another box and put it in assuming yours does not have a diff lock in it. Then sell your old one.....
