Water pump bolts 3.5 V8

Recommended Posts

First post here! I have tried searching this forum, but couldn't find anything relevant.

3.5 V8 efi, '89. Has been losing water from the water pump seal for a long time, now the radiator has developed a leak, so time to replace both before the leak sealant stops working!

Have all the spare parts, but the Haynes manual states that I need a special adhesive/coating for the long bolts on the water pump: "3M EC776 or equivalent".

I found a web page devoted to V8s in MGs that also mentioned this, but the spares suppliers have never heard of it, nor had one specialist V8 engine company.

So do I need this stuff? If yes, any idea where I can get it (i.e. equivalent) as the 3M stuff seems to arrive in multiple big tins only (and then only in the USA)?

cheers

Loctite 572 will do the job nicely.

Steve

Thanks! now to see if I can buy it here...

Follow up related question/request for opinion:

The AC compressor is long dead, and I have no intentin of fixing it. When I have the water pump off, I would like to remove the drive belt that goes to the AC compressor to reduce the odd squeel, but might this affect the water pump as the pully will then only have a load on one side?

Anyone done this or have any dire warnings? :(

cheers
