Battery Acid leaking from covers and hissing

So I just replaced the alt, bought a new battery and drove the disco (98) for the day, came home and the battery was hissing from the negative side point and I could see acid leaking from the top cover. I looked into it and I've seen that people say it could be a faulty battery, or overcharging. I'm not sure how to check for overcharging, I do have a multimeter.

Thanks

Put the meter on DC volts and check the voltage across the battery terminals first with the engine off and then with the engine running, it should be 12.5-12.8 volts with the engine off and no loads on the battery and 14.2-14.4 volts ideally with the engine running (it will come up gradually after starting rather than straight away).

A little less is not unusual if there are a few things switched on, any more than 14.5 indicates overcharging (assuming the meter is accurate) - if it is over 15 volts then it has probably boiled the battery and wrecked it which would be consistent with what you're reporting and would be my guess.

The other possibility is that the battery is defective and shorting out internally - either way you need to sort it out asap as otherwise you have a possible fire risk on your hands. A battery with an internal short "might" explode and if nothing else will shower everything with battery acid which is not great for corrosion.
