CwazyWabbit
It needs something to reflect off, so a line of white paint on the crank pulley would work, if the fan pulley is the same diameter (I can't remember without checking) some white paint on that will work just as well. Then you just point the laser at the white line and it will tell you how fast it's spinning. I'd user the laser tacho to see what your idle speed is and then adjust the defenders tacho to match. ninety84
Was going to get back on this topic to report pulley size of my alternator: it is 62mm, measured on the outer rim. Had to change the alternator today as the old one (45A) was dropping voltage to 11V when headlights and blower were on. Left me with an empty battery last year. Used the opportunity to upgrade to a 70A version and now it's nice and steady around 14V under load. Taking the alternator out made it nice and easy to measure the pulley size. ibz511
I like the idea of a tachometer. My td5 has a clock there which I don't need. Anyone know an Australian part number for that?
western
VDO do a 52mm diameter rev counter that would it, the LR one is made by VDO anyway, as a example https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p/vdo-tacho-52mm-diameter-0-6000rpm-333015010 IIRC in a td5 the rev counters connects to pin 19 on ECU
