Look what I brought home last night ..

Recommended Posts

This is a Fairey - perhaps yours was the Toro one ?

Which is a lot better, but has had a problem of parts being unavailable. I say ‘had’ because I read an ad on eBay tonight for one and they are rebuilt units to order ? 🤷‍♂️

I was looking at a Roamerdrive - but this is in decent known condition and at a fair price.

Hmm, just been having a goggle to see ,  and nothing rings a bell,.......  maybe it was just the FW hubs that were from Brazil but I certainly thought the OD was as well..

Anyway looks like you have a nice unit, ...look forward to seeing the installation:)

The splines look good on that clutch sleeve.  If the main shaft’s corresponding splines are as good, you’ve been very lucky!

Someone is rebuilding a late 2a gearbox for me - I’ve a few pictures:

Late suffix with the larger layshaft - which can’t hurt with the tdi in it.

Stripped to see what’s what...

To replace:

Primary Pinion, 1st gear pair, reverse shaft, 3rd gear pair, intermediate shaft for transfer box .... and on closer inspection, 2nd gear pair 😂

A nice clean gearbox build is one of the most satisfying workshop jobs. Looks great, will the OD be ready to go with?

It will be - biggest challenge I have is that by the time I’m ready to fit it all I won’t have access to a workshop with enough width to use the engine crane .... my outside space is pretty rough. So I’m exploring if I can get bigger wheels on it.

...... or some second hand plywood as a temporary surface, might be easier

That's how I do it. I'll lend you the a-frame if you like; the legs detach for easy shipping. Just add an electric winch, chain hoist, tackle blocks or whatever you've got.

Edit: just realised the gearbox pics are an old post! Did you get it sorted?

That’s an interesting set up - I assume you lower it to the ground and then pull it out from underneath ?

I haven’t put the gearbox in yet - still collecting parts and getting things ready to do a few things at once.

The aspiration is to do the gearbox, steering, and 11” brakes at the same time....

Yeah. Though to be honest, once you've got it free in a controlled fashion and supported on some blocks it's an easy two man lift with a scaffold bar across the cab and a couple of straps down to the gearbox.

Great pic's , particularly the black and white , a grey Fergie trundling off down the road with a sheep dog running along behind could only add to it :) .

thanks for posting
