What you can so (and I am about to do, and many others no doubt already have done) is to upgrade to +60% or +90% "Xenon" bulbs, which give more light than standard, but at the same wattage. More modern headlamp reflectors can also help, and all this assumes your not talking about sealed beam units
western
the Crystal lense headlights with better output bulbs should improve things [bulbs with +60% or similar but are still 55w dip & 65w main beam]
q-rover
If you do go for better bulbs get ones with clear glass, as any coating invariably acts as a filter and reduces light output. I have these and am very happy with them. They give a very white light compared to standard halogen bulbs. You could also rewire the wiring using a relay and better wire directly connected to the battery.

hobson
I've just got the +90 ones from Autobulbs direct, they're definitely brighter than the +50's that were in (which turned out to be fine and are now spares!) they make a big difference...
