carl hurst
I have been working on my truck latley mostly on engine and transmission and appart from importing the addapters not much is available so i set about making my own, I started with a billet of t6 alluminium 12 " dia x 175mm thick And started to make some swarf And large cut off's To reveal this All made on my trusty bridgeport manual mill. And turned a addapter shaft from 300m to go from auto to LT230 transfare box this has gone for the splines to be cut All this is for a GM 4L80E Auto box to a LT230 Trans box mated to a big v8 Next stage is auto to engine addapter so stay tuned, Carl. Boothy
I know, you want me to tell you ??? Its, its, its, a 1.2 litre Fiat Punto Turbo unit . Sorry Carl, sort of couldn't help myself. But take credit where it's due "it's lookin good baby"
DaveSIIA
sooooooo what engine & autobox are you using? The auto box is a GM 4L80E. They turn up from time to time in the UK ex-US services Hummers, etc or more commonly from mid-90's Jaguar XJ12/XJS/XJR. Be aware that the bell housing is cast with the box and not interchangeable - the Jag can't be readily adapted to fit a US V8. There is a bit more detail at http://www.mez.co.uk. The engine can't be a "1.2 litre Fiat Punto Turbo" as it doesn't have enough cylinders. However, two spliced together on a common crank maybe

BogMonster
Is there lots of swearing when you get to the stage of say picture 6 or 7 and then cut the wrong bit off? Lovely job

will_warne
Lovely job, Carl. This is very well thought out solution! I didn't realise until I had a look on the Mez link that the Bentley twin turbo uses a 4L80. That would be a fun conversion
carl hurst
So now its moved on a bit, here it is fitted together for a test fit I set about making a nose addapter to get everything lined up correctly The one that will be used is bolted to crank this is just to obtain measurements I have had to modify the torque convertor and flex plate to suite I have allowed 15mm for the addapter plate You can just see the dowl pins instaled And just enough room for exhaust. This has gone together quite well considering that the engine and box are from totaly differant origins the dowls line up witch made measurements for addapter plate a tad easyer
DaveSIIA
Be aware that the bell housing is cast with the box and not interchangeable - the Jag can't be readily adapted to fit a US V8. Why not? loaded question, just want to know, Carl. The bell housing on its own doesn't readily lend itself to adapting to a US V8. However, I didn't say it couldn't be done and a thin(ish) adapter plate appears to see you right (judging by the photo's) - much the same as LR did with the TF-727 in the RRC. That was probably a trivial exercise to someone with your measuring, marking and machining skills. Respect is due.
carl hurst
The basic profile for gearbox/engine addapter plate Only shown with one set of holes but it has another set for the engine bolt patern, Carl.
carl hurst
Today i made some progress by making this This was made using basic engineering measureing tools I set the gearbox up on the surface plate and cheked for square to plate so accurate measurements can be taken And scribled down some measurements Then layed it out and drilled some holes Then tried first set of bolt holes for allignment Then after holes drilled bandsawed out the outer profile I made two while i was set up Then test fit before counterboreing engine set of holes Then counterbore Then a basic set up on rotary table to remove centre Then all bolts instaled And engine and box are one So that the engine and box sorted so now i will get it into chassis and start on the instal of engine, i will post about the engine when it is up and runing in truck, Carl. That will never catch on!! Impressive piece of work Carl. did you really make two, or was one a "just in case" backup?
