Mike Brownlie
Where are the numbers on a defender ? I want to check everything ties up with the V5 as the previous owner has given me doubts about the authenticity of the vehicle.... I know there is the plate rivited in the engine bay, which is okay. But where else are the numbers ? Cheers Mike
BogMonster
VIN should be stamped on the chassis somewhere around the steering box mountings on the outside face of the chassis (you may need a wire brush and/or take off undershield to see it properly), and also on a plate inside the windscreen though the latter is not hard to change. Engine number is on the engine only, and there are gearbox, transfer box and axle numbers you can check against the LR Traceability service on a vehicle of any age. Jurriaan
Thanks to forum member Stobbie, the chassis number on an early One Ten should look like this: Don't know which model year Land Rover stopped using the British Leyland signs before and after the chassis number though. My 90" from 1988 has the little symbols before & after the chassis number.
