Owain_Thomas Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 I have just completed installing a Discovery 200Tdi Engine into a Land Rover 110 1987. I put the engine in complete with the PAS pump and reused all the pipework apart from the High Pressure from the pump to the Box which I used a Discovery pipe. The Power Steering box I have is the 110's Old Box (6 bolt) When I start the engine the fluid goes down, I Open the bleed screw and I have air then once fluid comes out continuously for 10 seconds I shut it off. but the bubbling continues (Big Bubbles as if it was boiling), (Girlfriend continuously topping up fluid as I go). I have bled the system about 8 times after which I was thinking of getting my waders to keep my feet dry of all the ATF on the floor. If I move the steering the level drops slightly (Lock to Lock the pump is noisy) but as soon as I stop moving the steering it froths out of the reservoir. Steering isn't powering the steering as it should. Did all the Logical things I could think of 1) Put a new pipe on low pressure side (Halfords QH Rubber Pipe (From Reservoir to Pump) Thinking there was a air leak or an air lock 2) Bought a new pump My next move is to replace all the pipework with new pipework, Does anyone have any suggestions? Thankyou in advance Owain Quote
Puffernutter Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 Very silly question - are you sure that the pipes are connected correctly between the pump, reservoir and box? I did exactly the same swap (albeit a 200Tdi into a 1989 Defender) and had no problems (new steering pump, old steering box). Cheers Peter Quote

Cheers Peter As far as I can tell their right, the only pipe I changed was the high pressure pipe because the pipe on the old pump was a Banjo union and the new pump was a compression fitting. Being of slightly later variant of the Defender (After 87) they changed the PAS boxes , Which I believed stayed the same until 1998. So if my knowledge is right you have a 4 Bolt box?, I'm wondering if the 6 Bolt box is compatible with the TDI pump or has my steering box given up the ghost! Thanks for the Suggestion, Will check connections again tomorrow. Owain Quote
western Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 6 bolt steering box & a 200Tdi PAS pump work fine together, certainly do on my 110. sounds like you still have air being drawn into the system somewhere, are the pipe connections dry & tight ? leave it overnight to allow the aerated fluid to clear then have another check & test drive in the morning. the fluid in the reservior will be slightly frothy due to the pump pressurising it, you may be able to see the flow in the res. with the cap off & engine idling. Will try again in the morning, Thankyou for the advice there is one pipe thats a bit suspect. Have got the full set of replacement pipes arriving tommorrow. All pipes seem to be dry but check again in daylight. Thanks Again Owain Quote
Milemarker Type S Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 My first thought was that the the pump was knackered- allowing air to be drawn in through the seals. (but you say this has been replaced as well...) We had the same problem with a friends truck- spent hours bleeding it to no avail. We changed the pump and still had the same issue until we realised that there was a tiny hole in the side of the new pump where it had been spot welded together! Changed it for another new pump and problem solved! Quote
