I'm going to have to bite the bullet and rebuild the front axle (in terms of swivel housing/bushes etc). I just wondered if anyone had any opinions on whether the kits made say by paddocks are ok quality wise or if i would be better sourcing the parts seperately (genuine parts? other manufacturers?).

I have removed a shim previously (6 months ago) on the drivers side, but now the housing is loose again (drivers side) and the seal is leaking (both sides). The swivel ball also needs replacing on the drivers side.

I have read Les' threads in the tech archive and just wanted some advice on parts. Also, what is the best way of checking the CV joint - i dont beleive they are worn out, no clicking on lock etc, but would it be best to replace the things anyway as the axle is coming apart? Am also going to do new wheel bearings whilst i'm in there. As far as i know, the 110 has done 160K without these bits being replaced at any point.

Thanks

(its a 1989 110 with retrofitted defender 200tdi)

I would suggest to use genuine seals, bearings, shims, spacers, etc.

Swivel balls, the aftermarket ones are probably okay, although I personally would go for genuine on those too as I'm a stickler for a thorough job.

As for the CVs, I should think any play or damage to them will be evident on a visual inspection once you have them out.
