Cartman Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Now orginally I planned to use the military oil cooler but it has been mentioned on here before that this type of cooler is a 'bypass type' so is the flow rate limited by it's internal design or just the use that it is put to with a 2 1/4? If it is more of a pressure issue then I have pressure testing facilities to hand to check the integrity of the military cooler (just aquired one for 99p so no loss if it went wrong?) Anyone have any suggestions there? The reason I want to go down this road is two fold. Firstly the Disco rad assy I pulled from the donor is in poor condition with the vanes starting to break up. Secondly I would like to keep the LR as std as possible (OK tdi accepted) so as the original HD Series 3 rad is quite new I would prefer to keep it and back it up with the military oil cooler or a suitable oil cooler to stop the oil 'cooking'. Now as an option and avoiding the unknowns at the local scrappy I have looked at the one below. Price is reasonable and would fit with a few mods (and I have suitable 1/2" BSP oil fittings to hand). As to it's cooling ability rating etc. I do not know but at 10Bar g it is more than strong enough for the oil pressure. http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=3743%3futm_source=Google&utm_medium=Shopping Anyone have any ideas Paul Quote
ejparrott Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 I've done the same as you and installed the TDi with the Series standard rad, my oil cooler is a gearbox oil coolers from a Vauxhall Callibra. My oil pressure steadies at around 55PSI when cold in winter and 40PSI in summer, i havent yet wired up my temp gauge though. Quote
Cartman Posted October 7, 2009 Author Posted October 7, 2009 So is there a thermostatic valve in the filter assy to only flow to the cooler when the oil exceeds a particular temp? From what has been said on here before the coolant on the tdi struggles to get up to any reasonable temp due to the engines efficiency so it is good to get confirmation that in your tdi install the Series std rad is more than adequate On the subject of oil pressure I have a gauge already on the Series panels which used to couple to a point on the old 2 1/4 oil filter. Did you use these fittings and fit to the pressure switch position on the Disco engine by the oil filter. Just wondering as I have yet to get around to checking whether the parts are interchangable? ejparrott Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 There is a thermostat, and apparently when you have an oil temp gauge fitted you can tell when it works. My oil pressure gauge is tapped into the disco filter housing, the original pressure switch hole. Quote
Cheesy Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 I used a Volvo one on mine, from an early 90s 740 turbo Quote
rjblank Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 I used a seperate oil cooler and the series radiator as well. It works great. I also installed a 300TDI intercooler on the other side of the radiator panel. Almost 2 years now and no problems... Quote
barmiebrumie Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 Has anyone done this in a 90 As I will be fitting a 200tdi into it & taking a 2.25 petrol out & had noticed that the rad in the 90 appears larger than the one out of the Disco Thanks in advance John Quote
ejparrott Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 yes it will be, the non turbo engined 90/110's have a radiator that goes the full width of the chassis, but the turbo engines have the intercooler statshed next to the rad, as the disco ones do. Quote
