iceshj Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 Hi, I have just done a complete chassis rebuild of my 90 and can say it flew through the MOT with praise from the MOT inspector, however that aside, I still have a few jobs to sort. The main one I really would like to sort is the fuel gauge. When I filled the tank up, the gauge only read 3/4 full. Obviously this is no good. I think I am right in assuming the wiring is good or else I wouldn't get a reading at all. I can only think its the unit in the tank that is at fault. What are your thoughts???? Just for info, it wasn't accurate before I ripped it all apart but one of those things that slip your mind when all in bits. Regards Dave Quote
tonycan Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Hi, I had the same problem with my 110 TDi. The fuel gauge fluctuates every now and then and sometimes will read 3/4 full and the empty tank signal will light up. At first it was the gauge but it turns out its the float inside the tank. I'm afraid you'll have to drop your tank and re-fit a new float. Quote
JST Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 i would assume the wiring is ok and the fault is with the sender. lift the drivers seat (assuming an early90) and take the sender unit out of the tank and check the arm moves up the full range on the slider with it connected and see what the gauge reads as you do it. We discussed this recently - i posted 'Why is my fuel light always on?' The gauge works fine, but the light flickered on and off at random intervals and is now always on. The wiring to control both are in the sender unit and combinations of one or the other or both may be faulty producing random readings at the gauge and the light. Change the sender. Quote
iceshj Posted October 13, 2009 Author Posted October 13, 2009 Many thanks for your thoughts. I think they confirmed mine really but was hoping for an easier option before having to unbolt the seat etc LOL. I'll keep you posted on the results of this one Regards Dave Quote

The sender unit is secured by a ring which you will need to tap round with a hammer and blunt object. The sender then lifts out of the tank. HTH. Mark. Quote

I have just had the bulkhead changed on my 1985 90 and have the same problem - I have ordered a new sender unit plus a new lock ring and casket. Any tips or advice before I tackle the removal and change of the sender? never done one before Quote

Dont know if it helps, but in addition to above, i grease the rubber seal before i put it back on - i thnk it helps to make a better seal. Quote
tonycan Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 Hi, in my fuel gauge's inaccurate reading I replaced the in-tank sending unit. The gauge still doesn't read accurately. Unfortunately the local dealer has no stock of a new fuel gauge. Would anyone know if there is something else I should be looking at to fix my gauge's inaccurate reading aside from the gauge? Thanks. western Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 other than the tank sender unit/guage & wiring there is nothing else to change. check the tank unit earth wire is intact 7 the earth on the gauge central threaded rod is secure & connected at the other end. Quote
