My trusty disco 200 TDi has become untrustworthy tonight, the transmission has completely failed with my first thought being the clutch cover plate collapsing, but the clutch still has a good pedal do I think I can rule that out.

It didn't make much noise, just a change from 3rd to 4th that baulked as if the clutch had not cleared, then went in the second try after pumping the clutch but leaving no drive whatsoever, (the transfer box has not jumped into neutral).

It's throwing it down tonight, not up to crawling about underneath it, but can anybody suggest what it can be ?

It gets all the gears but there no drive, (in high or low ratio),and there is nothing, (no flanges or shafts), moving underneath when in gear and the clutch out.

It saddens me, my suspicion is the transfer box and if it is she's not worth spending the money on, (which is a pity as she has a great engine), and I will have to scrap her.

Then again, I've been considering getting a Td5 for a while now, I can consider my arm twisted :)

Any ideas please ???

Probably the centre gone out of the clutch, a common failure on anything with the sprung clutch plate - if you take the gearbox out you will immediately see the problem if it is that, probably a collection of springs and gash metal in the bottom of the bellhousing and a two-piece clutch plate :)

Bit of a pain but not the end of the world costwise - certainly not a reason to scrap something.

The other option on older vehicles would be the mainshaft splines stripped where they go into the transfer box, take off the PTO cover on the back of the transfer box to check for this.

Try it with the diff lock on/in, does it move and drive, if so tell us, Disco has a known fault with the clutch fork which can wear through giving the effect of no clutch, the front drive shaft flanges can wear and loss of drive out of diff lock is the result, then of course there is the known transfer shaft wear problem, worth a few tests before drawing a conclusion.

Whats your location ?.......i have a LT77 gearbox that you can have if you can get it collected.....works fine but does have wear as with anything with a lot of miles on it.

But as posted above.....check out everything before you draw a line under it.

If the fork goes the pedal is normally solid and that doesn't appear to be the case. Rest of the possibilities are all valid though.

Thanks guys :)

As Bogmonster as said, I’ve ruled out the clutch fork as there is normal clutch pedal feel, (with no unusual slack), and for that reason I’ve also ruled out the clutch cover plate collapsing, so it looks like tem mainshaft splines that’s stripped which is going to mean a exchange gearbox so I’ve decided to scrap it, I’ve got a local Land Rover specialist coming round to make an offer this afternoon.

Thanks for the offer of a gearbox K88, much appreciated, but I’ve not got any facilities where I live to swap the box myself and can’t justify paying garage labour rates on a vehicle that would still be worth less than £1000 after the work was carried out, (plus just checked, the MOT ran out on Wednesday :( ), so I see disposing of it as it is as the best option and an ideal excuse to trade up to the Td5 I’ve been promising myself for months.

Can anybody give me any idea of what a reasonable offer would be to accept, it’s a 1993 200Tdi with a knackered gearbox but excellent engine, (no smoke, averages 32 MPG in flat Norfolk, normal running about, cruises easy at 80 mph), with 172,000 miles, Alloys with what I would describe as an average body, the Land Rover specialist has indicated between £250 and £500.

Regards and again thanks,

I could sell the engine for more than that here but I don't know what UK prices are like.

It could still be the centre broken out of the clutch drive plate - the pedal will feel normal and you can usually select gears there just isn't any go when you let the pedal out... whether you are prepared to pay the cost of that depends, sounds like maybe not worth it if the vehicle is low value, you would have to pay somebody else to do it, and you are looking for an excuse to upgrade anyway :)

I would have thought that if you can get to nearer the £500 end of this ballpark you would be doing well. She's done a fair few miles and she's currently a non-runner, so at for example £400, you'd be about right.

Now, moving onto TD5 !!! You'll almost certainly find they use more fuel - I do - but they are VERY nice.

I currently have three Discos and the one I use all the time is the TD5 'cos she is just so comfy and smooth. Much more refined than both TDi200 & 300.

You'll have to pay quite a chunk to get a good 'un though.
