Dave3d Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 I have a Defender 1997 110 with a 3.5 V8 block which has been modified to a 4.5l, twin SU's, electronic ignition. I have just totally redone the motor, gearbox and transfer box. Have set the carbs (using a uni-syn flow meter) set the timing to 6dec BTDC etc etc. The motor runs perfectly, has unreal power, does not smoke or use oil. The plugs burn perfectly, do not build up carbon. My consumption is between 5.6 and 5.9 is this correct or is it very heavy. If so has anyone any ideas to improve the petrol consumption, I do not want to get rid of the V8 motor. It is such a pleasure to drive. Have thought about the ignition system but it is expensive to modify. Can someone help. Quote
landmannnn Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Welcome. I assume you quote km/l, if so (17mpg) then it sounds about right. If you have larger than standard tyres your odometer reading will be too low and you will be getting better consumption than you think. Quote
grumbleweed Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 best way is to fill up to the brim, then use a gps like an E-trex which will log your miles, and then brim the tank again for a totally accurate reading. Doesn't sound that bad for a big 8 to me though Quote
V8 Freak Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 On carbs, it's hard to get good mpg, especially if you have a slightly heavy right foot. My 4.6 is returning around 16mpg average when I drive sensibly. When I use the loud pedal to make the world slip by a little faster it returns 9mpg. (I'm sure it can go lower if I used the loud option all the time.) Neil Quote
