hi everyone. having just come across this forum in my search for an answer i'd thought it might be worth relating the following problem;

1986 petrol 2.5 litre 90. used for some years as general work horse but then developed running problems all of a sudden which have caused the vehicle not to be used for a year or so. but now she is going back on the road if i can solve this.

compression checked on all cylinders and is ok. have changed all the ignition components except the distributer which appears to be working fine regarding the advance mechanism etc. new weber carb, and new pump. carb set up to the book and the tickover is so smooth it purrs!! mixture setting appears to be ok.

so; ticks over on the driveway fine and then we go for a test drive after its reached working temperture; accelerates quite nicely , at about 30/40 mph it feels like the choke ( whoich is also set up ok) has been pulled out suddenly leading to a loss of power. so its ok if i want to drive at very low speed/ low revs. i never have expected sportscar like performance but it used to run nicely, top speed of say 70mph and smooth.

totally at a loss for an answer, if anyone can shed light on this it would be much appreciated. thanks, mark

Yes, remove the fabric air box - carb pipe. These pipes are prone to coming apart on the inside, causing the loose bit to restrict the airflow.

Try running it without this pipe for a short test drive, see if the situation improves.

Sounds like some form of fuel starvation either blocked jets, dirty filter or weak fuel pump.

Do a search for "DMTL" there are plenty of threads discussing similar symptoms and potential solutions. I have a 2.5 petrol and I've had them all, just work through the suggestions methodically.

It's not something I thought of with my 2.5 petrol 110!

I'd replaced the leads, points, dizzy, pump, filters, stripped and rebuilt the carb 3 times and eventually replaced the carb in search of this problem.

All for the sake of a £5 air intake pipe!

When I finally found the problem, I didn't know wether to feel happy or angry!
