Hiya folks - another chapter in the tale of woe! I'd like to pick your brains if I may.

Trundling home from work today (9 mile commute over country lanes) and smelled a bit of an 'odour'. I pulled over and had a quick peek underneath and saw an obvious cause for concern: the unmistakeable sight of One-Shot spattered up the tyre wall and brake disc of the off-side front wheel. I've taken pics but can't upload them at the mo - it really looks like a grease-balloon has burst down there! I'm pretty well versed in the meaning of such a display, and although it's massively annoying, that's not the crux of the question:

This particular hub was rebuilt by a reputable local garage (and LR specialist) less than 3000miles and 10 months ago. The work done was new swivels, bearings and ball etc. Since then, the truck has been SORN and immobile from Feb to June (Tdi conversion took a while longer than planned...) and has only done road mileage since then. As such, i'm pretty darned sure that the seals shouldn't have busted ALREADY!? I'm not really au-fait with 'standards of work' in law and all that - but I think I have a just cause for complaint and to demand the work be re-done??

I would appreciate comments - especially by anyone who has been in a similar situation!

Thanks

Guppy

3000 miles isn't "a reasonable standard of workmanship" at all, particularly from a specialist. This kind of work should last many tens of thousands of miles, and 100,000 wouldn't be an unreasonable expectation for a road dwelling Landy.

I would start with a calm phone call and arrange to take it in, repeating to yourself that you want the work re-done at their expense. Mention of the press often works miracles if they fail to see your point of view ;) The small claims procedure is worth the £50 (and you can get that back from the defendant too when you win).

You certainly have a right to expect 'reasonable skill and care', however, I would suggest you ascertain what has gone wrong and why before forming a view on this. I agree that a polite but firm call requesting that the fault be inspected would be a sensible first step. If the garage concerned deserves its reputation then this should lead to a satisfactory resolution.

Good luck!

Before you do take it back to the repairer ,Check for possible reasons for seal failure , A common one is an axle breather blocked or pipe kinked over . Just try to find the cause before the garage do because this is their way out of not doing it on warranty .

check as Jase says for failure and then drop them a line and ask about warranty and you are thinking of having some work done etc etc.

Thanks guys. I'll give it a thorough look-over tomorrow and let you know my findings before taking any action!
