Farmerfred Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 Hi All. My first post on the Forum and am in need of a little help! Although I've had a Disco for 12 years, I've recently bought a '96 ES model that's covered just over 75k and have found that it smokes a fair bit. This happens when driving at between 1500 and 2000 revs (depending on which gear it's in) and at this point there is a bit of 'drag' like turbo lag and this is when it smokes, greyish black and swirly. If I put my foot down it picks up immediately and the smoking stops. I've gone through a few simple things like replacing the air and fuel filter and ckecked that none of the top or bottom intercooler pipes are collapsing, all this is ok and I've put a bottle of fuel treatment stuff in the tank but it still smokes. I was thinking that the EGR unit could be the culprit but as yet have not gone so far as to dispense with it and blank it off with a 'kit'. I was hoping that it would clear itself as it has only done about 200 miles since last May and only pottering around and I have given it another 250 miles (1/2 a tank of fuel) of fairly hard driving but the problem is still there. Any help, advice and tips from the experts would be very much apewciated. I thank you in advance. Farmerfred. Quote
matt bristol Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 I've had the same with mine recently, among other issues, however since I have stopped re-enacting driving miss daisy and give it some welly every now and then it seems to have cured itself. Also since starting to drive it harder it goes better at low rnage / low revs too. I have unplugged the wires from the EGR but not removed it, Quote

Also since starting to drive it harder it goes better at low rnage / low revs too. I have unplugged the wires from the EGR but not removed it, I think that I may have found an answer to this, or in part anyway, and it is a possibility that the intercooler is gunked up with tar like oil, some have said they have found about a pint of the stuff in the bottom.
