battery set up ?

Recommended Posts

hi , as ive posted a while back im fitting some batterys to my D90 to start her up and run her two winches(8274)

how does every one wire them up , seperate ? ie: one battery for the starting possable lights as well ? charging via a split charge system

or in parrellel, using both for all applications ?

my delimea is do i buy two yellow top optimas (best deal i found is specialist leasure @£160 delivered) and run them seperate , when i could just use a ''ordinary'' battery for the starting and the optima for the winches , and save nearly £100 ?

hows every one elses system layed out ?

cheers

I run two type 072's wired permanently in parallel that run everything and I've had no problems. Think i paid £72 for the pair. Shop around the local motor factors for the best price.

There are a few others (Tony Cordell springs instantly to mind) running the same setup.

Cheers

batteries generally don't like being run in parallel but if they are well matched, identical in every way i.e. new, same make/model/age etc. you should be ok. Remeber when you jump start, you connect 2 batteries in parrallel; at worst you will get perfomrance of sngle battery , at best performance of 2x capactiy of the single battery but in reality somethwe in between, hopefully towards the top end. :)

Go parallel, just make sure your wires are fat enough!. :o

these have never drained even after winch 6 vehicles through a hole where the wheels don't touch the bottom for 20-30m or so one after the other non stop.

big bonus is it starts bluddy quickly

and JST winched his 90 across a 119.85mt field(boggy) with no engine running using the same set up.

Mine are both identical, bought at the same time from the local factors.

Alternator is 90 amp jobbie from a Mondeo. Wiring is all 35mm2 welding earth cable. Same as Tony - never had any trouble, except with a knackered XP motor that was drawing so much current it melted all the insulators and isolator switches! Turns out it was faulty DOA!

i was going to answer but Tony has beaten me to it. 120m though!

i purchased both at the same time, thye both had same date stamps, setup in parrallel and fit std battery box as per photos above.

replaced std alt with a disco one.

enough in them to winch as above then drive it on the starter 30m into the garage, (needed when timing belt had snapped) then after timing change enough juice to start the engine.

so they are worth it for my needs.

total cost £36, as they only charged me for one and i dont pay the VAT.................. (oh yeh plus the wires from VWP)

been fitted for 12mths.

I run with twin alternators and twin optime red tops.

That way, the winch system is totally separate from the main vehicle, although i think i'm going to have to lose the second alternator to make way for my york compressor.

Possibly, but the only bits to go would be the alternator and the 300Tdi mounting bracket.... the pullies and belts i need for the air compressor.
