Hi Martin, Yes I am going down the bonding route well sort of, the frame is 1 1/2"aluminium box the sheet has an 1" fold in it to allow it to be bonded to the frame, it has/is being folded on a press break buy the guy that has built the frame so they fit exactly into the gaps I will bond them to the frame with Tiger Seal which will seal the panels to the frame and bond/stiffen the whole body. From what I have read Tiger Seal is very good and can be used as a seam sealant also and can be painted so fits the bill I was going to go for the aircraft type bonding but it was very expensive and required a lot of prep!!! I read in the fast car forums that they use this stuff to stick/bond body kits and spoilers onto their sopped up nova’s with many warnings about it getting tubes stuck to the workshop floor and having to use an angel grinder to remove it!! I will through a couple of rivets in there just to hold it whilst the sealant is going off but they will not hold the panels and could be in theory be removed..... The doors will be 2mm chequer plate bonded onto a 9mm ply board with channel around it to seal the edge, they will close against a 3/4" angle with a door seal against it the "kitchen and storage hatch" angle will be bonded to the frame however the "rear door" angle will be removable to allow the whole inside to slide in/out so the whole thing can be used as a box trailer if I need or if I find the inside needs to change. I will seal the rear angle to the frame with neoprene strip and then rivnut that to the frame so that everything maintains a good seal watertight/dust seal. The frame will be bolted onto the trailer chassis, but will sit on a rubber/neoprene seal again (same as the tub that came off). The only exception to this is the pannier covers over the jerry cans and the gas bottle and battery panniers which will not be air tight for safety etc but are sealed from the main body of the trailer. Guest Posted April 20, 2010 Share Posted April 20, 2010 So the light is at the end of the tunnel, I got a phone call today from the company building the body, they were just finishing welding the sections together and had come accross a problem, could I come in!!!!! I was actualy nearly passing so poped in..... ok so it turns out I can't add up!!!! The base was 1" inch bigger than the side lockers DOH....!!! Just shows, I changed the design that many times that I had given it an extra inch!!! as they were just welding the frame together they were able to take 1/2 an inch of both sides without any issues, and at least they asked. They have made a really good job of it so far and it looks better than I had hoped I had been warned by others that box alu would twist and not be straight, etc but it is spot on they have been really carefull pre heated the metal before and after so it is straight as a die, it's really strong and very light weight I could pick up one side with no problem, confirming that I have made the right choice with strength to weight etc. I am really happy with the way it looks, I am taking the trailer chassis there tommorow and it will be finished all the panels are finished, I don't think I will be able to sleep tonight, guess the hard work starts now. The bright shiny alu looks really good, tempted not to paint it but the tiger seal is black and aluiminun tarnishes anyway and I have 4 liters of Java black paint so I should really paint it but SHINY..... It was a bit like when I get flyers through to the brewery, with all the shiny stainless tanks, thats stainless porn so now I have discovered ali porn!! As I said I have the paint now the Tiger seal is black and I have been told the sun bouncing off a mirror finish can be very off putting/dangerous.... But it's OK I will have the photos!!!! Jason. Guest Posted April 21, 2010 Share Posted April 21, 2010 Prepare you for Aluminium/Trailer Porn... So picked up the trailer today... Yea... They were just finishing it off, all the panels were done they just needed to do the roof rack brackets and finish a couple of welds. The body is very light, I would think around 45kgs and the best thing is it fitted!!!!! It was exactly as I had in my mind and a spot on job. I got the trailer home and started to first fit the panels and it went together really well and I am very happy with the finish and the fit. So now for the hard part........ just got to finish paint do the inside, should have it done for Friday!!! Enjoy the trailer porn........... I think it looks bigger than it is, the trailer is riding fairly high at the moment, if you look at yours and where the wheels sit I think it will sit down a bit more when it is completed. The wheel arches are the same size (height)as the sankey tub that was removed, but as the body is a lot lighter than the steal tub removed I guess it was to be expected, I don't intend to fully load it but I also don't want to limit my options, the wheel arches are wider than original but that is to cover the alloys/spacers. I won't be going to Driffield, too far away for me for a weekend trip, so hopefully will be going to the Heritage Land Rover show at Gaydon on May bank holiday weekend, hence having to get my foot down to finish it... He has a couple of bits to finish off and I need him to trim the doors down as I have changed the spec on the channel that will edge them, but again down to me not him. Guest Posted April 23, 2010 Share Posted April 23, 2010 So had a evening dressing all of the welds, I do love flap disks they make life so much eaiser, good news is all of the welds are good, as if I didn't know that!! all of them dressed now I also dry fitted the floor. I have been working on how I will get the doors to fit and the seals will work it all seems to fit well the door fastenings are a bit big but can be adjusted. I mentioned before I made a mistake with the size, realised now why it happened, I added 1/2 an inch to the side lockers to allow for two jerry cans to sit side by side, as these will not now fit, I am going to have them all open on the sides and build two boxes for the jerry cans on top of the side lockers. I have figured out that there are not enough hours left for me to finish the project by next weekend LR show at Gaydon, so it will be the last time the roof tent sits on the roofrack before the trailer is ready, but having come this far I don't want to rush it for a weekends camping, and end up wrecking it for the summers real trips. Guest Posted April 25, 2010 Share Posted April 25, 2010 So I started to figure out the inside, I built the unit around the sink, it will slide out the back so a box will be built around it to hold it in the fridge and the water heater will also slide out. The whole sink/cooker unit will be freestanding so will fit tightly into the box and will be self supporting hence the amount of screws!!! It is also glued.... so is very unlikely to fall apart.. I will fill and paint the box and need to line the grill area with 1mm stainless and also line the splash back area with stainless. Once built I plan to drill lots of holes in the ply to remove as much weight as possible whilst retaining strength. Not sure what to paint the inside in yet, I did think about something like blackboard paint, so any comments would be welcome.... I also fitted the spare wheel to the front but managed to snap a wheel stud!!!! it is now inside the alloy wheel nut so not sure how I am going to get that out, anoyed as it was one of the only things I got from Newbury..... Cheers Ross, No the one fitted is missing the top stud, not quiet sure how i managed to snap it!!!! don't know my own strenght, just posted a wanted add for a new one, only thing now is to try and remove the snapped stud from the nut!!! wish I had a lathe....
