suggs
91 200tdi 90 think i may need to back off the pas box a bit as the steering is very stiff and it came up on the mot today, i was advised that it prob is the sterring box. ive had a look and i think its the nut on the top in the centre with the hex bolt in the middle that i need to loosen?. when we had the 90 on the ramp at the mot station with the axles supported and turning the wheels by hand it took a lot of effort to move them left to right, quite shocked me how stiff it was, also the steering dosent centre very well when turning on the road!! ive undone the centre nut which i guess is a lock nutt but the hex bolt seems pretty much seized so wondering if the box is knacked. any ideas, ps ive checked the swivels etc and there both smooth.. TD5 power
hi try spraying some penetrating oil on the UJs as if they seize up can make the steering heavy matt
western
more likely the steering column UJ's either need changing or lubricating, when these start to sieze they cause stiff steering problems.

suggs
right i managed to get some adjustment in the steering box and all that did was give me lots of free play in the steering, but it still feels heavy and not centring so fingers crossed it is just a UJ. ive coated them in WD40 and will keep coating them over the next few days and see if it free's up...
