Galvanising?

I've got myself a rather rusty looking southdown axle and steering guard combo (you know, they rust underneath where the ground has taken a battering against the steel), so it looks like it could do with re-dipping,

I've also had to make a new pair brackets that attach the lower guard to the axle (the Y shaped jobbies) so these need coating too.

Sooo, the question is, the parts that are already galvanised, can they just be re-dipped or do they need cleaning back to bare steel again?

IIRC the southdown stuff isn't dipped - it's electroplated so a thinner coating.

Either way, if it's a zinc coating (which I am pretty sure it is) you can bung them straight back in to the galvanisers - the pickling process will clean them up before the final dipping.

Thanks for the replies, i'll make some enquiries. anyone know a good platers in the South? (near swindon? )

We use Medway Galvanisers but I guess will be out of your area. Plenty of galvanisers in London. You need to ask for the collect and return service. With Medway they can be a bit slapdash, galvanising drips and crud left in blobs, however, if you ask for galvanising and powder coat paint surprisingly they do a magnificent job of galvanising because they have then got to paint the item! and when they send it back it is nicely padded to stop damage. Does cost a bit more but well worth the extra since you need to treat galvanising or zinc & pass before painting, which is a no no for the diy man.

Jim

There is a place on the Beckhamtpon - Devizes road in the farm buildings on the left about half way along, MDM (?) does shotblasting & power coating so may also do galvanising.
