hobson
It seems i'm having one of those days, i have a problem with my lights i need sorting tonight ideally. when i turn on the sidelights the small lights come on but the main ones which usually come on slightly dimmer don't, this is also accompanied by a high pitched continuos beeping noise which i've never heard before. when i put the main lights on they're fine, but high beam only the drivers side comes on, the spots which are also wired into high beam won't work either. any ideas? -and i've just noticed, wiggling the wires on the ignition make the whining noise change... vexedfoxy
A friend of mine had a simalar problem on his 05 td5, no spots but the side light main beam issue. I will ring and check with him but he found a major damp issue and with current weather that would not be a suprise wherever you are in the UK. I am new on here this may take a while to appear I will ring him now. I certainly remember him going on about the bleep noise.
hobson
Update; the noise is coming from a big pinkish coloured relay behind the instrument panel, is it a case of replace the realy or is it something else?
LandyLee
sounds like a dim dip unit playing up ,what exactly is your model and I`ll look up on the diagram for you, used to get it regularly with 300tdi discos which had spots wired straight to h/lights so that spot relay power was taken from headlight ,,,
mmgemini
That pink relay is the dim/ dip relay. I do have a sketck of how to re-wire the relay block so you can take the relay out. Give me half an hour.
hobson
1995 300 Tdi, if i know what the problem is i can get the part first thing tomorrow. i just wanted to make sure that it is the relay before i replace it. On the same subject, i had this problem when i first got the vehicle, but it didn't make the noise, all the other syptoms were the same though, i replaced the headlight bulb thinking one had gone but that didn't cure it, but after a few days it went back to normal of its own accord so i just thought i'd got some water in the wiring and it'd dried out. any chance it's related? Edit; i never really liked the idea of having the spots wired to the high beam curcuit, is it easy to change the wiring so i can turn them on/off regardless of what lights are on? LandyLee
if all the lights are working perfectly except from the dim dip unit ,which without going technical, runs the headlights at a lower power so they work as side lights ,then I would have said either faulty unit or check earthing to unit. May be simpler to do away with unit by connecting the headlight dip inputs to it to the dip output from it ,
mmgemini
Here we go This is the relay block looking from the top. DON'T try to remove it. If you join the two sockets that I've blacked in. Then the headlights should work without the relay. Use a fused link to do the checking. One advantage of this set-up is that the heradlights only come on when switched on with the ign switched on. LandyLee
according to wiring diagram you are reconnecting the blue / red wire which goes to the unit on pins 2 and 8 , hope this helps
vexedfoxy
Spoke to my mate he replaced the relay (pinkish) as described now above and proplem solved, well he had it replaced he does nothing on his own vehicle so probably main dealer job. Sorry not much help.
hobson
Thankyou gents, much appreciated, so after i've done the 'adaptation!' i need to get a new relay? and then it should all work? or is there a likelyhood of something else wrong? LandyLee
if its a lucas relay then I think I`ve got one in work ,,,, sounds like either relay or earthing to it , since you said all lighting working ok except for dim dip unit
mmgemini
Being tight, I did live in Yourkshire for a bit.... Why replace the relay. It's not needed. It only causes problems. Especialy if you replace the headlight wiring with some wire of a better size.... Well that's my view....
