Hi there everyone, could somebody please help me before I scream, I had experienced the hg failure last week, this was caused by the water pump failing, the impeler blades spining on the shaft.

Anyway, i took everything apart using Les' fantastic descriptions and photos, I had the head skimmed, have changed the gasket, changed water pump, changed the moded thermostat, changed belts, changed spark plugs, filters ect.

Now its all back together but it wont start, timing is spot on, the engine turns over fine tries to fire but doesn't catch what should I do next has anybody had this problem before, its driving me mad.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts. JD

Im assuming your talking about the lovely k series engine here. If so the tapits could be sticking and/or some of them have gone soft and not opening the valves enough or at all, if they are just sticking then it should start after being left for a good few hours which lets the contaminated oil drain out of them and when you try and start the engine, fresh oil will be pumped through them and hopefully get them working properly.

Also what has happened to me in the past is i thought i timed it up properly but had one of the cam pulleis 180 degrees out as there are timing marks every 180 degrees on each pulley, it should be so you can read the exhaust and inlet stamped on the pullies, also its possible you could of put one of the pullies on upside down

Other than that all i can suggest is mayby squirt some oil down the bores to try and help it gain that extra compresion to get it to start and check for spark, fuel..etc etc before delving any further.

Yes its that great engine the K series ughhhhh! Well I have checked again and everything is the right way round, I will try the oil trick, a friend of mine towed me to get it to start, it did fire up after a while and ticked over for a while but no throttle response, clouds of white smoke, then it died again, it tries to fire but wont keep going, I have got a friendly mechanic who will look at it tomorrow, I hope he can sort it, its really infuriating after a the work I've done and it not starting.

Did you also check that the dowels in the end of each camshaft are in the correct slot in the sprocket?

[Alas no.

Another weekend trying to sort it out but to no avail, my mate came round to have a look on Sunday but he couldn't sort it, the engine tries to fire but doesn't run we think that may be a sensor has gone down so something. I will have to call up a mobile diagnostic to come round and have a look I hope it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

We tried your ideas thanks but they didn't work, thanks anyway.

So I am going to have to admit defeat.

Regards Jon

If you think you have a sensor messing up the fuel system you could try to squirt fuel directly into the inlet plenum. If it still wdoes not run the problem lies with the ignition or the timing.

Silly suggestion maybe, but the symptom also matches a blocked exhaust...

best thing to try is put all timing marks so they are right on the top cam pullys take the bolts out and look at the ends just behind the bolts you will see a little dowl on the back cam make sure the dowl is set to the (in) on the pully not the main timing mark on the slot were the bolt goes in and on the front cam make sure the dowl goes to the (ex) and time it up again and it will be ok if you not done some valves in
