Happyoldgit
A larger intercooler and a remap of the ecu is the customary start point.
td5_2004
i already done that. now i want to upgrade the turbo to a variable nozzle one. i already have one off a mercedes on the way, i will see how it does. but if someone has anymore ideas please post here. Steve H
Lara was going down this route for his 2.8 TD5, don't know how far he has got, check him out in members vehicles & maybe PM him. Cheers, Steve.
freeagent
track down Bruce from the Tombraider club, he's on here quite a lot 'TOMBRAIDER110' i think.... he knows a bit about this as his Td5 is putting out nearly 200bhp.... m@tt

Lara
I will post info and pics as soon as my new VGT unit is on and tested, making the manifold at the moment. Lara.
td5_2004
here is an update. yesterday i recieved the Gt22v Turbo off a mercedes E270. its massive compared to a standard td5. we immediately opened it to see the mecanism, and it has another set of blades (variable). it needs lots of modifications like manifold and exaust. now here is something we did not understand. the actuator is vacuum operated. can someone help us how to do it? how does the vacuum actuator work? andylandy
it needs lots of modifications like manifold and exaust no sh*t sherlock i know andy at allisport are working on this at the momment but be warned upgrading a turbo on a td5 will need specific fuel mapping to make it work properly give him a call and see how he`s getting on
jules
Fit a V8 Ok I'll get my coat. My 2.0 TD4 has about 200 bhp you must be able to get more than that out of it
pugwash
ahh jules i was just getting there but you beat me to id. my advice- unbolt the dieselly bit, buy another turboo, and run with a trwin turbo V8 setup. The turbos won't last long i guess (i assums TD5s are variable geometry turbos) but you'll at least have some fun!
td5_2004
i already talked to andy, they did not come up with anything yet. the only person that might help here is Lara or anyne that has a 2.8 tgv installed. i will try to find a boost actuator or try to fit a normal waste gate. as regards to the ECU mapping i have already worked on that. any other ideas? LR90
So assuming it has a stockish wastegate what does this vacume actuator actuate? It might then be more obvious where to plumb it in (perhaps tapping differential pressure somewhere) or even plumbs into the vacume pump but with an ECU switch solenoid so that its actuation is under programatic control. Bush65
I have a 2.8 TGV turbo on my 300Tdi. Don't know about what they use on Mercs. The VW Tdi are vacuum operated (computer controlled I assume). The actuator (for vane control) on the 2.8 TGV turbo is not vacuum - it gets pressure directly from the outlet of the compressor.

They don't have a wastegate. The actuator controls the angle of the vanes (so called varaible nozzle) in the turbine inlet, to control boost pressure. In essence it is variable A/R ratio. Have you looked at the uprated inter-coolers from JE or Jeremy fearn. and the ECU upgrades from JE they built my 200 bhp TD4. My mate had a TD5 90 that could spin on tarmac all in first second and third on 265 BFG AT's it was fitted with a JE phase two kit

Why would I be bothered to do any of that? I'm in Aus. We never got computer controlled 300 Tdi. As far as intercoolers go, I have a good, custom built, air to water intercooler from A R E a little larger than what they normally fit to 4.2 litre Land Cruiser diesels. As far as TD5 chips go the ones from Bruce davis here in Aus, perform as well or better than most.
Bush65
Performance report? I never ran the stock 300Tdi after swapping it for the v8, so I have no benchmark. Never been on a dyno either, and IMHO dynos figures should be taken with a grain of salt if comparing different vehicles with big differences in gearing, tyre size etc.

If you haven't run the engine yet my question drops though P.S. As usual, should you have any pic of the VGT fitted to the stock 300 I'd like to drool over a bit

I have a inter-cooler that is half again the surface area of a Disco two radiator and three times the depth fitted in the freelander the only this I have seen bigger was towing 44t. There was a Bowler 200 wildcat running a very played with 300tdi that was quick but my freelander was beating it 45 sec per 9 mile lap on the Scottish round of the British off road championships last year. Ali fly's back out late July

Pi$$ ant stuff If you want to see an intercooler check this 1500 kW Holden road car here. This was built by the person that made my air to water intercooler.
