munkymush
hi, can anyone tell me something about steering boxes .. ? when the bottom seal goes is it wear/damage on the shaft? so is it possible to repair with a speedi sleeve type of seal surface repairer.. or is it not just the seal surface that goes or indeed is it not possible to fit one because of the way its designed? just wondering before i buy a recon box this week.. thanks glenn
sheltie50
The lower seal can be replaced but is likley to fail again, you would be better to buy a good recon unit.
munkymush
i have replaced the seal once about a year ago..your right they do fail again but i wanted to know if its a doo-able thing to use one of the speedy seal repair bushes if its just a pitted shaft causing the seal failure? Les Henson
You mean a speedy sleeve? If you can get one to fit the shaft, then it may well work. You need to know if the bearing inside is ok though (no play in it), before you attempt a fix. Les.
munkymush
thats it les, have you ever used them on steering boxes ? i was just wondering if its worth a go supposing i can get one to fit+ as you say theres no play ..
Les Henson
I've never used one, no. Pitting on the shaft or play in the bearing is the usual cause of leaks though, so if the bearing is fine then there's no reason why a sleeve wouldn't work. Les.
