eds
My starter motor was changed for a new Bosch one because the old one clattered. Annoyingly the new one clatters in exactly the same way. When you do get a clean noise-free startup it is a joy but I always get this quick paced clatter noise and am unsure what is making it. Any clues? LandyManLuke
The solenoid can 'chatter' if the wiring is poor, or the battery is weak.
eds
Batteries are new Not sure about wiring or teeth missing I am hoping teeth missing is a long shot as that sounds like loads of work. I am not sure which bit of wiring to look out for?
LandyManLuke
Check the battery -ve to chassis strap, and then the chassis to engine/gearbox strap, as well as the main battery to starter solenoid supply. All connections should be clean and tight. You could put a meter on the solenoid trigger wire and see what happens when you crank the engine over. You could also try feeding the solenoid direct, to eliminate the starter relay and ignition switch.
eds
Ok I'll have a look at the wiring tomorrow and report back.
