Classifieds Forum

Recommended Posts

There's been quite a bit of discussion recently about the way we run the Classifieds forum. We liked some of the suggestions so we've been taking a good look at putting them into practice.

As of the middle of next week, it will become impossible to post in Classifieds unless you have at least twenty posts to your name. Obviously, this won't stop the more determined spammers posting rubbish in the other forums to get their count up, but it should curb the vast majority of spam and save ROGUE TROOPER and the rest of us spending all our time deleting them.

We'll also be making the Classified rules a bit more visible while we're at it, so no-one will have any excuse for not reading them

I think its a good idea that you have to have more than 20 posts.

Sounds right to me.

What about people looking for Item for sale ????

I sometimes visit classifed sections on other forums just to purchase or to advertise I am looking for x

Since most of us on here are dedicated LR4x4 members and have been on here a while why not increase the required post count to say 50 or even 100 to post on the Classifieds. That would probably stop the spammers who find it easy to make 20 rubbish posts with full-stops in or whatever....

'Wanted' ads/posts could be made by anyone regardless of the number of posts..?

He's got a point - with a higher post requirement I bet people wouldn't write carp everywhere else.

They'd just go to another forum where it's less hassle. How about 30+?

Does that apply to persons wishing to reply to "For Sale" adverts too? In other words you need 20 posts to buy anything in there?

I don't know about increasing the number of posts required; I think it'll make us look unfriendly and closed.

Lets face it, 20 posts is still quite a few and most spammers should be caught and barred by then.....

Yeah - you're probably right, will, I guess it's overkill really.

FWIW, I don't think you need a limit on the number of posts for folk to post "Wanted" adverts,

There are not quite as many spam buyers are there are sellers is there ? :P

... and there is no need to resurect the SPAM can photo :D

I raised this. As I undertsand it anyone can reply by PM or add a post to an existing thread. Just need 20 posts to create a new thread (including wanted).

Right.

sensible head on here (yes i know that is hard to believe)

But whats wrong with the old system of a heading post saying you must have 20 posts blar blar, and the mods just deleating/politely advising that this is how we do things here?

unless i have missed something it has worked (to my eyes) up until now?

The current system fails because although it's there at the top of the page - a large portion of people for the first time have some unique type of sight problem that prevents them from reading forum rules.

As a result Rogue Trooper spends a lot of time removing these posts, and going by recent complaints, not only will he have to do that, but also post up a reason for doing it just in case anyone gets offended.

The forum software can now be made so that it'll only allow people to post in the classifieds after they have made a pre-set amount of posts on the rest of the website. At present only posters of for sale items are removed, but the alteration to the software won't be able to discriminate between seller and wanter, so no-one that has less than the pre-set quantity will be able to post.

Les. :)

How about 6months probation, 100 posts and a min contribution of £50 to the mods gin fun, that should help keep the number of posts down :rolleyes:

This site was recommended to me as a fair forum run by adults for adult 4x4 lovers. we are adult and have to deal with junk mail on a daily basis, I don’t have any difficulty in working out what to keep or ditch.

Yes you could set the req'd post to a private club type number, but what would you achieve?

LR4x4 members surly need on the odd occasion to renew or improve their beloved chariot, and for that they need parts. to my view if more parts are advertised , you get a much better choice and price; surly that is a benefit to all lr4x4’s.

Alternatively you can make it a closed shop where you can only buy from the approved elite who have 100 posts+. Then when nearly all have that you, can raise it again & again & again.......

if a post is offering something that a member needs... then it should be allowed if this forum is here to improve

its members usage of their 4x4

My very humble 2p's worth

BandL1, I agree with you entirely, my previous post wasn't intended to be taken literally.

Spam, in my view is unsolicited and irrelevent advertising. So should someone posting ads for 4x4 vehicles/parts/events in the classified/event sections of a public 4x4 forum be classed as spam?

It would make it simpler if we just abandoned the 20 post rule.

I suspect it may only be a hangover from days when we had to answer to the mags and they wanted to keep the ads (paid for) in their pages.

What on earth do you mean by that? 20-post rule is reasonable and is there to prevent spammers/abusers of this website. If you want that, then not here, this site is successful in a large part because of no commercial ties. Sponsors or spammers.

If they are current members, then it's reasonable to think that they might have already made the required number of posts.

No offense, but that's ridiculous.

Perhaps you could benefit us all with your wisdom and define what is and is not allowed?

In the real world smaller companied pretend to be individual sellers (Mr Wuffles is a case in point)

No doubt he is doing us a 'favour' by selling Land Rover parts on here, but then so is any other company doing us that supposed same favour. We then get into the realms of the commercialism we are supposedly set against.

I think and support the 20-post rule - it's what is reasonable in my book. Doing anything else is making it unnecessarily complicated.

Hi, I agree with the above, the likes of me who has very little to add to vast amount of knowledge/skill available here makes it so I'll never be able to use the classified. Its your site so you make the rules but who are the ones abusing it? This is, as you know, one of the better sites, keep it up and thanks for your effort. Best regards Bill Westley

I agree with Les. I managed to say so - rather more clumsily - in the pinned thread above. ;)

Are we? We all have to buy parts somewhere.

I thought we were against getting into bed with any commercial concern and the restrictions that come with that.
