Thickness of steel for chassis repair

The tin worm has been at the forward petrol tank crossmember. just beside the rear seat belt mounts. 1990 Vogue SE

I'm taking the boot floor up to repair/replace it so now would seem like a good time to sort out that cross member.

What thickness of steel does the panel consider suitable?

Last time I did anything to a RRC chassis I used 3mm plate, for no other reason than I had plenty of it to hand.

3mm seems to be a common choice, though if you're Hybrid from Hell then there is no plate thinner that 8mm
