Off Road Toad
Right then - i have a very annoying problem. My wipers on the 90" are not performing as per specification. It started about a year and a half ago when i could'nt turn my wipers off. I have replaced (at that time) the park sensor and the switch assembly - these made no difference. I resorted to pulling the fuse when i didn't need wipers . After a while they seemed to just fix themselves . Until now that is. When we were in Romania in july at a car wash, i pulled away and couldn't turn them off again. When the car arrived back in the UK (trailered back) they worked fine. Now they wiping full time again and i'm getting peeved now. Any ideas? I've heard there is a delay ECU somewhere? is this correct and where will i find the bugger? Any thoughts or suggestions welcome before i smash it to peaces with Landrover tool no:1 Steve Forgot to mention its a 1998 300tdi (well originally it was )
western
delay/intermittent relay is the Red one behind the fusebox metal panel, sounds like it's not operating correctly. looks like this
Off Road Toad
Superb - i'll try swapping it out with known good one before purchase, no doubt it's uber£££££ Thankyou. Steve

cackshifter
Or you can push the boat out and get an upgraded one with a programmable intermittent delay. Can't remember the no. it's the Golf GTi one, cost me just over £10. Ahh.. found a link with the pat no.s herelink AFAIK it just plugs in, but there's a thread on here about it. Retroanaconda
How do you control the delay? Fit a new stalk with a control for it? Or some sort of rotary control in the dash?
WarPig
I bought one of these relays, but it didnt work in my 300tdi. It just put the wipers on permenantly. With the correct relay, to adjust the intermitent wiper to give say a 5 second delay, flick your lever to intermitent, then back to off. Count five seconds an then switch it back to intermitent. Done. If anyone can point me to the correct relay, I would be very grateful
cackshifter
Interesting it didn't work on a 300- my relay's gathering dust & high on the todo list to fit. Pt nos are on link on my prev post. Brakes and a BP style oil leak are occupying a bit of time first... Nigel
Aragorn
I used a Golf "99" on my old vauxhall, and on the old A4, and they worked fine. I guess if the landrover wirings a bit different you might need to move some pins around to sort it.
Off Road Toad
Pulled the relay out and It came as no surprise that its full of water Don't know how that happened Steve
WarPig
When I switched the wipers on they worked fine, but I couldnt switch them off. They just remined on at the slow speed. Had to remove the relay to stop them. Bit annoying as I really wanted to have adjustable intermitent wipers. Aragorn, which pins should I try rearranging, and how, please? wormey
I had this problem, tried everything but failed. I had to call a auto electrian. it's the earth that was the problem. they ran a new earth lead from the washer pump, all sorted.
WarPig
It was only when I fitted the new relay that I suffered the problem. As soon as I put the original relay back in, everything was fine again.
western
How do you control the delay? Fit a new stalk with a control for it? Retroanaconda
Mine both have that as standard, but my Focus had a twisty bit on the stalk where you could actually adjust the time delay between wipes on intermittent mode. Since it always happens to be raining just the wrong amount to suit the Defender's pre-set delay, it would be handy to have it adjustable. TSD
Just fitted a VW '99' relay to the Ibex (300tdi loom). Works a treat, best upgrade I've found for ages As a side benefit I found the number of wipes you get when washing depends on how long you hold the wash button down for. A brief squirt gets only one wipe, holding it down longer seems to give 2 3 or 4 wipes after you let go.
WarPig
TSD, where did you buy your relay from please?
TSD
TSD, where did you buy your relay from please? From these guys via eblag. Maybe not the cheapest on the bay, but the postage price was honest (extra items free). Relays were clean, unmarked and arrived next day. Going to upgrade my 90 at the weekend with the second one I bought
Aragorn
One of mine came from a skoda, and was numbered differently, and as a result cost me 3quid delivered. Let me see if i can find the part number for you. 3B0955531 numbered as "197"
PieEater3142
Does anyone know if there is a low profile version of this relay? I have fitted a new fuse box and this bugger wont clear the lid....
western
it's meant to fit on the metal plate front face nearest to the bulkhead on the lower row of relay prongs so it sits alongside the other relays. there isn't another low profile version for defenders. PieEater3142
Yer I had a dig around. Looks like I'm making a custom cover for the fuse box (as seen here): It sits on the far left with the flasher relay. Just gonna have to knock something up to go over it all. Don't really want wood but metal is gonna be dodgy - anyone got a plastic moulding tool
