ROGUE TROOPER
.....Imagine you have been made Big Cheese of LR, what would you do? I would Produce a "basic" model Defender for the 3rd World countrys without electronics etc!

Steve H
All of the above, plus loose the seat box in the defender so that rear seat passengers have somewhere to put their feet. Sort of like Santana have done. For me, the Defender is the only current new Land Rover I can even pretend to afford, so whatever they do to the others is largely irrelevant, but a lotto win would see me in a V8 diesel Rangie Sport Steve. When i went on a Land Rover factory trip about 5 years ago . They told me they had just built 40 Seris 3 for africa. Manly due to the fact that the coils we makeing them drive too fast on the dirt roads. And hence buggering the cars. So they ordered a load of seris so the leafs would slow them down
Brian
The 300TDi engine has been available all along in the 110 pick up, for selected export markets. Yes, South Africa is one of them and this extends also to the game viewer on either 110 or 130 chassis. Just recently they introduced, for SA only I believe, a base 110 station wagon, called the Kalahari, also with the 300TDi engine as standard. It has wolf wheels, rubber mats on the floors only, basic vinyl seats for 5 people, there being none in the rear load area. Cargo tie downs are fitted in the back. There's no radio, but the wiring speakers and aerial are fitted. No side steps. Rear tow bar is fitted, as well as a winch ready bull bar. It does have aircon though ! Got to have a little luxury for the hot months All for about the same price as the base model 1.8 SE Fairylander Regards, Brian

Roman
I would Produce a "basic" model Defender for the 3rd World countrys without electronics etc! In 3W countries, who cares about electronics or lack of it if they have no easy access to spares and service facilities? LR never bothered to support their products as much as other manufacturers, so they lost these markets. It's easier to make flashy cars that need loads of flashy accesories that need fitting by "highly trained specialists" than face the reality of bush motoring where cars are demanded to perform. Guys, forget it. LR will never regain the position it had when the Japanese were still learning how to make and sell cars.
GBMUD
forget it. LR will never regain the position it had when the Japanese were still learning how to make and sell cars. They could. Just that they are unlikely to put the money and commitment into doing it. In the UK LandRover are still trading on the reputation gained in the 50s, 60s and 70s in these overseas markets - exploreing, mapping and "civilising" these far flung foreign places. Sooner or later they will have to change their marketing strategy as people forget what LR once was. They could restore some of this by re-building these markets... but I doubt that they will. Mo Murphy
Perhaps they could start by putting Defenders through the water test before passing them to sales. Mo
white90
very well put! the dealer whom we got Vals Freelander from are shocking! back for a brake problem they called me to advise new discs/pads were required at a cost of some £200+ I said go ahead as The ones they fitted new the week before must have been pretty shoddy and I expect they'd be covering the costs... when I collected the car and enquired after my 2nd set of discs/pads in a week suprisingly there was no need to change them after all.... the service receptionst then asked if we used the brakes rather a lot. I replied yes every time I wanted to slow the car down. the daft idiot.. needless to say we haven't been back since and highly recommend no other person does. Les Henson
In a similar theme, I took my 3/8" ratchet back to Halfords the other week. It's from their professional range and has a lifetime guarantee. I plonk it on the counter and tell the guy that I want a replacement under the guarantee as the ratchet slips sometimes - he says "what have you been using it for?". Incredible - absolutely incredible. Les.

I plonk it on the counter and tell the guy that I want a replacement under the guarantee as the ratchet slips sometimes - he says "what have you been using it for?".Incredible - absolutely incredible. Les. Sadly veering right off topic... Last week I jacked up my LandRover with my 9 month old Halfrauds 3t trolley jack to do a couple of jobs and the damned jack got as far as the axle and failed to lift any further. It is one of the posh types that lifts very fast with no load on and then slows down when it hits the bottom of the car - worth while on a LandRover. Anyway, after a bit of messing, jacking the jack up and down it was OK again. When I came to do the other side wheel I managed to break my Halfauds Professional 1/2" breaker bar. The square just broke right off. I was standing and jumping on it at the time but still... Anyway, I took the jack and the breaker back to Halfrauds expecting a dispute over till reciepts, consumer rights and the trading standards department and, without a murmour they replaced both of them there and then. Who says that Halfrauds are all bad? Chris
