The sd crownwheel and pinion flexes under load and then the teeth can be sheared off, there is a modification where you place a brass plate bolted through the casing so a "Slipper" of thick brass is just clear of the back face of the crownwheel, if then under load it trys to flex the slipper of brass stops it.
