Disty
My 300tdi always squealed when you put revs on it, but when doing my rebuild I deliberately changed the fan belt to see if it would help. It didn't. So I then changed the bearing in the fan belt tensioner, which I thought would help. It didn't and it's possibly worse than before, but I can't really tell. What else could it be? It's ok when it idles but as soon as you start to put your foot down it really does squeal loudly!!
ashtray
a leak in your turbo hoses can cause this, i doubt the intercooler will be leaking as they are solid ali but a hose can definately make this noise. a bit like slowly letting the air out of a balloon! Check all your hoses are tight and have no splits
reb78
Turbo bearings on their way out? Check the oil feed to and from the turbo perhaps.
Disty
Thanks, I'll check that- but I also swapped the old ones for silicon hoses so I'd be surprised if it was that. But it does make sense that if it were the turbo, it would only happen at higher revs!
reb78
Hope its not, but they do squeal if oil starved or failing.
landroversforever
Alternator belt? My truck has always squeeled a bit... but yesterday it went mad and squeeled constantly when over about 1500rpm.... Turned out the Alt belt was shagged
Disty
Eh oh better not be the turbo.. will check that out. I thought the alternator belt was part of the serpentine belt that does everything?
outdoor_ian
^^^^^^ It is on a 300TDI unless you are running a twin altenator set up.
landroversforever
Of course Sorry!
Disty
Ok I've thought about this and it may well be the turbo. How do I check if the oiler is working properly?
western
take the feed pipe off & get someone to crank the engine over, it's pressure fed from the main oil gallery/oil pump.
Woody3
IF it's not the turbo, have you tried the penny trick... http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/300tdi-squealing-whining-noise-97819.html
