FridgeFreezer
You might find this interesting: http://www.carbibles.com/additives.html Seems Slick50 and many others have lost a few lawsuits of late There is a company in Fareham that makes the machinery that puts the additives into oils and fuels, I believe they supply the additives too. Can't remember the name but they're in the Wallington estate, might be worth searching them out and asking?
jules
Active-8 I found very good but I can't work out if its better or not over time but I noticed it the moment I added it to the 4.2. I used to run it in every thing but when I ran out I never got round to replacing it..... I think its very good but far from cheap
Tonk
i always see active-8 demonstrated at shows, sparking bearings etc, looks impressive, no idea on cost.
jules
i always see active-8 demonstrated at shows, sparking bearings etc, looks impressive, no idea on cost. That was the one for me It was seeing a chap I know from the CTOC that owns a lorry and Plant repair garage and site fitters spend £600 on buying Active-8 off the guy at one show . that was a few years ago but my truck need very little maintenance from warn parts from when I started using it four years ago and I ran out two years ago
Tonk
maybe a time for a chat with him when i'm at billing then
FridgeFreezer
ISTR Dave Haynes muttering something when passing an Activ-8 stand at a show (they're the ones with the metal bar you can force into a metal wheel as a demo aren't they?) it was something technical that was beyond me, asking on the Shire e-group may get a response from him. Tonk
hmm i've always wondered about wot he demonstrates with and wot u're actually buyin is the same stuff, maybe i'm just a cynic though
FridgeFreezer
I think the gist of DH's comment was that the demonstration only shows one type of wear, which that additive does work for, but there are other things going on in an engine/gearbox that it potentially bu**ers up. I'd say you're better off just putting better quality oil in rather than adding stuff afterwards - the oil companies' research budgets are astronomical so I'd hope they know what they're doing. Tonk
i was mainly thinking transfer box, i currently use castrol gl5, or is there a better one on the market?
FridgeFreezer
I've heard good things about the synthetics that difflock sell. What's up with your transfer box then?
minivin
well it's a Series TC, so lets start with what's good with it suppose if an additive helps to cut down on some of the whine, I'd be interested
Cartman
Mark, I've used the Difflock fully Syth GL4 in the Series box and it is good. Definitely better than stock mineral GL4. Well, at least the Comma stuff Not cheap though.
02GF74
I did the bar pressing thing on the active-8 stand but am sceptical for the rreasons FF says; it is unlikley the bloke has discovered something magical; more likely the stuff is just better than other oils for the demonstration he uses; and the big oil companies would be selling the stuff. I did used to add slik 50 to engine, gearbox etc; can;t say I notice any difference in the engines but gearbox on the bike did; bu**er so long ago, can;t remenber if it was for the best.... I'd save just use a decent oil to the manufactureres spec.
missingsid
Before I saw Slick50 in the UK A product called Nulon (I think) was touted around by another company with the marketing that, they installed it in an engine (don’t know what sorry) ran it for the necessary period to spread evenly, and then let all the oil out of the sump as the engine continued to run. The spiel was how long the engine ran before/without failure. In theory the product was proven, unfortunately Nulon (if it worked) disappeared and Slick50 stayed so I don’t know which was best. I put Slick50 into my engine recently and now (unconnected?) it sounds like it’s run dry on start up (might be pres relief stuck).
