TobyMellin
Hi all I'm after a bit of advice. I purchased my 1991 Defender 90 2.5td a few months ago, and a month or so in the clutch fork went, so I purchased a Valeo OEM Heavy Duty clutch from mailorder4x4.com. It's been on for about a month, and on the way back from dropping a stranded friend off about 20 miles from home, it started slipping in higher revs. It was absolutely fine setting off, and for the first about 1500rpm (roughly as it has no rev gauge) it was fine aswel, but anything more and the engine would just rev as the clutch slipped. I could coast at about 30 in 5th and the engine just revs and doesn't go anywhere. The clutch was about £100 delivered, and then £200 to be fitted by a local Land Rover specialist. I had a whole new clutch inc release bearing; the cover plate and the friction plate and clutch fork etc. Obv if the clutch is nackered mailorder4x4.com will just replace it as it is warrantied for 2 years, but will it just be the case of having to fork out £200 again in labour costs to have it fitted? I thought by fitting a heavy duty it would of been a fit & forget jobby, especially at £300. Any advice would be much appreciated, especially if anyone else has had the same experience. Cheers Toby
Ian M
slave cylinder sticking. had it before.
LandyManLuke
It is quite possible that its a hydraulics issue, and the clutch itself was fitted/supplied absolutely fine.
western
have you reset the clutch pedal operating rod, if no set correctly it can keep slight pressure on the release bearing & make the clutch slip. the info is attached in one of my replies in http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=24390
Mo Murphy
Mine has slipped where the operating rod wasn't set up correctly by myself. Did it properly in the services car park on a french autoroute and all was well after Mo
TobyMellin
It's back down at the garage now, so I'll make sutre they check those things. It's also had brand new clutch slave and master cylinders (all top quality Lucas/TRW parts) when the clutch was fitted, along with new clutch pipe etc. I'll give all the ideas a go and fingers crossed it'll be a cheap fix. Cheers Guys

JimAttrill
Strange - I've just recommended the Valeo HD clutch in another post on this forum We always use that one in the workshop along with OEM release bearings and (on 300tdis) a new clutch fork reinforced with a welded on plate. ps. most of the release bearings we replace look perfect. In my limited experience I have not known one to fail. We don't do much wading here so the story may be different in the UK.
TobyMellin
Hi all Problem now solved! The clutch kit was absolutely fine, apparently something on needed backing off (couldn't understand what the chap said, strong yorkshire accent ) Cars running spot on now, just need to fit my spots and new winch solenoid, then off we go. Cheers for the advice guys Toby
LandyManLuke
Sounds like the adjustment on the master cylinder piston/clutch pedal. Glad it's sorted.
western
good to read it's sorted to your satisfaction.

Mo Murphy
Interesting reading on the clutch recommendation front as I'm about to buy a new one. The B&B (AP now) comes with a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty and is £7 cheaper. However Valeo is OEM fitment and gets good reviews. Do I really need a heavy duty 130 clutch if I don't do a great deal off road ? Decisions, decisions ! Mo
western
IIRC LR genuine part clutch friction plate for all Tdi engined vehicle of the Defender range is the 139 HD plate.
JJB Serenity
I had my new HD Valeo clutch and new hydraulics fitted the other day. up until today everything has been fine. For the first time today though I was able to drive my Landy on an 'A' road with national speed limits. When I got up towards 35 - 40mph in 4th I was getting a big vibration, almost like a shuddering. The vibration got worse the harder I accelerated and went away the moment I eased off the throttle. It wasn't as bad as I was accelerating down hill and was worse when accelerating up hill. It was just as bad in 5th. I wasn't able to get above 40mph as the vibration got so bad the Landy would have shaken itself to bits!! I then tried 3rd gear above 30mph and the closer I got towards 35mph I would start to feel a bit of a vibration developing. does this sound like clutch slip or something else wrong? It wasn't doing this before I had my clutch changed. Tomorrow I will get under the truck when its light to check my props and UJ's. Thanks in advance John
western
& the nuts between engine & gearbox & the gearbox/engine mounts, have a look at the wheel balance weights too, might have shed one or two.
Anderzander
If its following paid work done by someone else I'd be tempted to just take it back for them to sort out...
JJB Serenity
thanks western I'll take a look. Don't think it will be the balance of the wheels though as the vibration stopped as soon as I eased off the throttle and was travelling no less fast. The guy has closed now for Christmas so won't be able to take it in for a week or so. typical eh
Ex Member
Sounds like a UJ.
JJB Serenity
I think it may well be the uj as it gets worse as the speed increases. Probably seized up in the poor weather. Going to get under tonight to have a look. Spoke with my mechanic today and he said he will have a look tomorrow morning as well which was nice of him as he's closed now for the holidays so it should get fixed too!
