I'm with NFU too and mine’s (Disco 1) due end Jan - Premium up 71% on last year!! :o

Something's up but can't get to the bottom of it - they are definitely going to lose business.

Expected price hikes but not that much.

NFU's policy / cover is undoubtedly good and pretty hard to beat when you look at the detail.

I've been with them for 6 years with Max NCD and no changes to risk or vehicles. They sent a reminder wanting £230 than last year even though it has been within a few pounds more - or - less the same for the last 5 years.

It appears that loyalty is not recognised or rewarded these days so I'm looking around. The person at the NFU said all she was 'empowered' to offer was a 10% client retention reduction so you can tell that the increases are set higher up. Make of it what you wish - I know what I think!

I have our Home Insurance through them too - you’d think that might work for you - apparently not!

Anyway - looking through this forum's history showed up a few good looking Companies so that was where to start.

Have been on and off the phone the past 2 days. ‘Price Comparison’ sites are pitts because the Devil is in the detail and you need to ask question to get what you want out of insurance - not what they market as savings.

Surprisingly to me I found that Tesco's have provided me the best quote with the most comparable degree of cover with NFU, AFTER all the missing bits were added back in (of course the price mounted back up) with the one exception of the personal accident or DEATH was 5K rather than 15K).

I tow an Ifor Williams trailer and asked all companies if they covered the trailer too (as do NFU - but only up to current value or £1000 whichever is lowest) and they all say oh yes sir of course. In fact they only cover for 3rd party damages caused by your trailer NOT your trailer if it's nicked of the back!

Tesco's rep had to go and look it up and then read it out over the phone. Apparently it gets the same cover as your truck gets (ie) fully comp if you've got fully comp.

I haven't gone with them yet as (1) it still is £80.00 more than last year and (2) I've thought of a couple more questions to ask yet (Cost of cancelation fees, upgrade fees etc. etc.) but even when adding all the 'missing bits' in I'll still save £150.00 over NFU (before their magnanimous 10% offer to keep me!!)

My only declaration of interests is that the misses sometimes shops there - and I’ll have the club card points if I renew with them!! ;)

Last year £321.42

This year £549.27

Tescos (at mo) £397.02

HTH

Anyone any experience of them?

I too have been insured with the NFU, for more than 10 years now (Several discos and a defender over that period). I have stayed with them because of their excellent policy and the great service from the broker.

My renewal came yesterday for my Disco 3. Last year, £789.71 - this year £1115.14 odd ! Thats a 41% increase.

The policy has three named drivers plus lots of bells and whistles that such as only £100 xs and full breakdown cover etc. I have started to shop around also and have got down to as low as £630.00 but for a poor spec policy with an excess of £600. Add the extras in and up it goes. I spoke to my NFU broker and by increasing my excess to £500.00 like most other policies and removing the business cover that I do not use, it came down to £910.00. Still a £140.00 increase over last year!

More checking needed of other policies small print needed before a decision is made.

Sure Term won't insure the vehicle if its used for work.

You may want to check on that?

I currently use SureTerm (well the policy is Highway/LV with them as the broker) and that has business use included. Its proper business use and not just travel to a work place so I am covered for work loads etc. - Ok, my job is in tech and I sometimes have servers and bits and bobs like that in the back, it's not quite the same as a builder insuring a 130 tipper I guess but its still business use.

That said, I am dreading my renew this year (a small altercation in the snow is going to really hurt ;)).

I have always used Lancaster for my Defender. Just had a renenwal quote through for less than last year. I phoned them as I wanted to add extra's such as roll cage and winch bumper and they added it to the policy for the same price as last year which was 260. I also got a quote from Adrian Flux who said they would match this price so havent noticed any increases from them.

Luckily I am at an age where my increase in experiance means that its come down every year so far for my discovery but I don't reckon I will get much more of a reduction this coming year. Last August when I renewed I really have to work AF down by fiddling with the policy and removing a few features that I have little use and am covered elsewhere by. Try adjusting the excess and also seeing what features you already have from elsewhere. I was able to knock £200 off by moving my excess up and loosing 2 small packages that I had from other suppliers anyway.

Cheers

I had a conversation with NFU about my renewal a few weeks ago, it to had a fair price hike and it turns out last year was a centenary year which gave a double mutual discount. I managed to get the price down a bit without having to make any changes to the policy or have any excesses.

My girlfriends horse policy has just gone up over 50% and they won't budge on that at all giving her the same double mutual discount last year line.

Seems like a hell of a price hike across the board to me.

i was with cornhill direct for wifes car and houshold insurance

they wanted £800 to insure a disco 2 even though the previous year it had been less than £400

so i got a quote from flux that was about the same as previous year told cornhill and they said they would match it, i told them to get stuffed

but i was even more shocked last year when cornhill sent me the household renewal buildings and contents previous year £380 renewal quote £2400

when i phoned up they said that they had done a postcode reclassification and my farnborough hampshire house was in the top crime area so no budge on price

so i phoned up flux and they got me insurance from the same company that cornhill were using for less than i had been paying

so it pays toshop around

I got my forms through from Flux in December Last year I had chosen to pay by 10 instalments, just thought I would check the price against what I was paying they had put the price up by over 45% and were going to charge me £25 to renew the policy ("they need to make some money!!" I was told) plus add a load of stuff I didn't need and at an interest rate this year of 48% APR in short a rise when calculating the whole costs of over £300.

I called them up to state my dis-pleasure with the rise their reason was the previous underwriting company was no longer taking new business!! and they had moved me to another company. I pointed out that this was existing and not new policy however they said it was in my "best interest" to swap, but if I was not happy they would look at the new quote and see if they could find a better one!! in the end I called the existing under writer and found a local broker who did business with them, they were taking new business and were more than happy to cover my 110 again as had been with them for the last couple of years, the added benefit was they even had all of the mods listed so I didn't need to go through all that again.

I guess the moral of the story is the Land Rover specialist insurers are just brokers at the end of the day looking to make a profit, if you are happy with your insurance underwriter and getting no joy from the broker or massive hike, dig out your insurance policy find out who the underwriter was and then find a local broker who writes business with them you may get more luck.

I saved over £100 on last years quote not including the finance which I didn't use this time and over £400 on the quote from Flux.

Jason.

Fed up to do any more. I'm happy enough to have saved £150 and so phoned tesco's and signed up.

Just written a letter to NFU:

Extract:

It is with some regret, after six years, that I have to let you know we are not renewing our Private Car policy with you this year due to the NFU’s stance on their required premium.

An increase of 71% for no additional risk from loyal patronage of 54 year olds such as ourselves is unacceptable.

There are many other ways to recover losses from increased fraud beyond the easiest, yet stupidest, by penalising the loyal and the honourable.

It seems to me whether it's Insurance, Home Heating Oil, Council Tax, Vehicle fuel this is going to be a year for fighting the art of profiteering! !

I think it's a case of 'Striking whilst the iron's hot' (people are expecting to be hit) and then gunning it for all they can - for greed!

My 2penneth!

Started off with M&S but then their premium went stupid so last year went with NFU. Just like others, the renewal was a massive increase (no claims) of over 70%. Phone call gets the reply "well all insurance premiums are going up". Loads of phone calls to end up back with M&S at a sensible price. Daftest of all, they have a standard list of modifications and when I ticked "spotlights" the premium came down £5!

I guess NFU either think we're daft enough to just cough up or don't want us any more. Either way they're going to lose a LOT of business.

Malcolm
