I found this in our very own classified section...

New and fully rebuilt alternators for sale (I have several) for Disco 200/300Tdi, Defender 300Tdi and (should) fit defender 200Tdi as well, 65amp.

Rebuilt ones have new bearings top and bottom, new regulators and brushes. Some have new rotors. Output windings are fully continuity and insulation tested - good as new. All have been fully tested in a vehicle under load.

£75 new, £60 rebuilt, PRICE INCLUDES INSURED DELIVERY.

No pulley or fan, You will need to transfer over - 22mm cranked ring spanner and 8mm allen key.

Return your old alternator to me for a £20 refund off the above prices. I can swap fan/pulleys from old unit if required.

Portsmouth/Hants

I also found this:

- Participants may not use the Forums to post or transmit advertisements or commercial solicitations of any kind.

Read the full post here: http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=2196&st=0

and this:

The Mods decision is final :D

Now, I do not want to rock anyone's boat here but it would be nice if we were all in the same boat and that we all knew which boat that was and who's cabin was who's.

I may have the wrong end of the stick (oar? :) ) again but this looks a lot like a commercial solicitation. I guess that simonb may be re-building alternators at cost and just out of the kindness of his heart. I may be pointing the finger quite unfairly and if this is so then I humbly appologise, but it looks a little suspect.

I also know that this post was brought to the attention of the moderator/s five (5) days ago. I presume then that a final "Mods decision" has been made. This being the case, would someone please explain where I have gone wrong in my interpretation of the rules, I simply cannot fathom it.

Thanks

Chris

Mmmmm.....The whole charter / appointing Mods thing seems to have gone a bit quiet without any decision being made, least not in public.

I have a suspicion that it's just been quietly brushed under the carpet while everyone forgets about it!

Chris,

Although SimonB is probably not doing it out of the goodness of his heart, at those prices, it's hardly the basis for a multi million pound business empire. I suspect it's somewhere inbetween - i.e. just earning a few extra quid in his spare time?

If this is the case, you would have to bar ads from quite a few other members too.

In conclusion, I would err on the side of allowing it - unless my suspicion above is totally wrong.

A post is moderated depending on what it is and on a case by case basis.

For instance if a person starts posting "adverts" of commercial content and its a one off then there is not a lot we/I can do If there is no evidence that he or she is doing it for a living. However if they continue to "bump" it up so its at the top of the form, or continues to post it then thats a differnt matter.

We also must differenciate between a "hobby" and a buisiness as some people who sell stuff on a regular basis have a full time job not related to what they sell.......and besides if its a product that will cheaper and benefit all of us we should embrase it.

I have noticed that those who do complain are the first to jump on a good deal when someone does sell products commercially (you know who you are!!)

So to sum up......... the 20+ posting has reduced the commercial post in one stroke.....which is good.

But still people will take the urine.......its human nature to bend rules, after all thats what we are here for as Mods, to keep a eye on you 'orrible lot!

The post by simonb was discussed in the inner sanctum and was decided to let it go for the reasons above.

As regards the Charter, its still being discussed and has NOT been forgotten.

Not so and somewhat unfair. The charter is still very much work in progress - work that has to be fitted in and around the real life stuff that goes on away from the forum. I undertook to help drafting the thing but have not been in the best of health recently - apologies for not being able to meet a schedule that I was unaware existed

I am sure that Si was not suggesting that work should have been quicker. It has to be said though that there has not been any mention of it on a public forum for some considerable time. Now we all know, thanks.

There is always going to be a grey area with regards to what can and cannot be posted in the classifieds. Moderating that forum is by far the hardest of any on this website. People complaining that ads should be allowed would no doubt shout just as loud if every L/R company put a price list in there. Occasionally Rogue Trooper asks for comments on particular subjects, and indeed he did with regards to the post Chris has commented on in this thread. We think it's fair and reasonable to let simonb keep his post. Most of the time Rogue Trooper makes the decisions all by himself and the rest of us mods/Admins are very happy with the way he controls that particular forum. Any long-standing member of this website can get away with more than a newbie as far as the Classified section is concerned.

If any forum member thinks that:-

(1) We moderators are going to explain every single action to everyone just in case some moaner doesn't like it - is sadly mistaken

(2) There will be no big list of rules and regulations that you/we have to abide by

(3) The charter is going be along the lines of 'are you happy with how the forum is run?' As long as the majority say 'yes' then that's good enough.

(4) People that say that they have made a donation of £x, and assume they might have more rights than anyone else should consider that knowledge and information is pretty-much what this site is about. A lot of people on here could answer a question and save the poster of that question a lot of money. So which is better?

I personally think the charter is a waste of time. A bit more communication in a few key places is all that I think is necessary.

Aren't we all grown up's on here?

FFS - everytime someone raises a point you get an over reaction like this. Chill out Les. :)

Don't know the facts, but assuming Chris raised the question 5 days ago - if it was discussed and decided on the moderators forum - then if someone had PM'd Chris back to let him know the decision he wouldn't have posted on the Int'l forum asking what was going on. Just simple communication would have been ok as Chris was happy with Rogue's response.

Cheers

Steve

Just to put my side of the story...

I'm not a trade autoelectrician or alternator shop, this is just to get a few beer tokens - much like all the classified ads. I have a day job!!!

I have 4 alternators which I have rebuilt, they have been acquired mostly from Sodbury. As someone said i'm not making much profit on these after parts.

I have rebuilt several alternators for m8s, I'm just doing forum members a favour so that don't need to pay over a 100 squid for a brand new one from the various mail order places.

Its also saving the planet by recycling and if you have no use for your old unit, instead of binning and landfilling it, I might as well rebuild it! The £20 back is £10 postage for sending it to me and £10 incentive not to bin it!!!

And by the way, nobody has bought 1 yet anyway....they probably won't now as well

I have received no PM/emails from the moderators questioning me to see if this was commercial solicatation, so I assume they gave me the benefit of the doubt, otherwise they would have pulled the post....

I work with Simon, so I can confirm it's not his day job, at least not before about 1500 anyway :-p

BTW Simon really does do all the work stated, I know he had me help get a bearing off, and I am running a alt that Simon rebuilt last year after it seized.

I see Simons advert the same as if Nige offered to make some radius arm washers, ground anchor or something for parts + labour + beer.

Sorry if I have upset anyone or caused a fuss, that was not the intention. SimonB, I appologise for suggesting that you are mis-using the forum as a trader. Rogue, sorry for suggesting that you have failed in your duty, you have not.

As SteveG suggests, more feedback when members use the Alert a moderator function could prevent situations like this from arising. FWIW I was not the one who first raised the query but I wanted to know the answer too.

If you own a series motor then kerb-crawling is the best you can hope for :D

Police:- Ok, sunshine, you're nicked (smack, kick, punch) for Kerb-crawling.

Rogue Trooper:- But Officer - I was in third and the throttle was nailed!

Police:- In that case you are under arrest for being drunk in charge of a rusty old jalopy on the public

highway, wearing a loud shirt in a public place, having an offensive wife, and having an alarming

hairstyle with intent to frighten old ladies.

Rogue Trooper:- oh bugger!

Les. :)

(Sorry Cally, I was just kidding)

Those alternators are very cheap, and for mean old sods like me, cheap is good. If its good, why not post it on the forum? I like to read good posts like this one. I think the moderators are genned up enough to be able to make a judgement as to whether something is a "good" post or a "bad" one?

Lets have more "good" posts like this one, I paid £98 for a rebuild alternator, and nothing off for the old one!

We dont want full blown commercialism, so keep the shops etc out, but let the ones like this stay, (if the moderator so decides, of course).

Geoff
