Steve_M
Has anyone here fitted a superwinch 525 to a series 3 (specifically a lightweight)? I am just looking at doing this and am trying to work out the shaft lines and the mounting arrangement for the winch and it would be a great help if anybody would be able to give me a bit of a headstart. For example will it be possible to mount the winch on the orginal bumper (with suitable strengthing) or will I need to use the defender style 525 bumper? I think that it should be possible with some cutting of the front panel but if some one could confirm this or otherwise before I start making alterations it would be useful. I do have the defender style bumper so if I do have to use it this is not a major problem but my preference would be not to. The second major issue is the shafting arrangement, if anyone has this setup and could give me the details of the pto shaft they have used I would be extremely grateful. I am guessing that this will need to be a custom shaft. Thanks in advance, Steve
minivin
well, only pointer I got with what I have achieved with my 525 too SIII conversion is that the defender bumper will sit close or too close to your wings, so upto you on whether you want to go that route. shaft wise, aint got a clue as I'll be going hydraulic
ltwt1981
I have PTO winches front and rear on my lightweight. Biggest problem is the cross member is closer to the bumper and this means either moving the bumper forward about 2 inches or modifying the mountings to get back against the cross member. A bit fiddly but not to bad. Which PTO do you have, there are two, I have one type my brother has another, look the same but the drop is different on the two types. Make the shafts yourself after mounting both bits. I used the engine mount to fix a bearing and needed two rods, and three UJ's. I think my brother has 3 or 4 rods plus UJ's a nd two bearings. It's fiddly and fun but not two bad really. I had to remove the gearbox steady and cut off the lug, its in the original Land Rover instructions for mounting the winch. ltwt1981
I'm only at Hindhead on A3 if you want a look at the installation.
Steve_M
Minivin, thanks for the information. I am going to try offering the 525 bumper up to the vehicle sometime over the weekend and see how I feel about it. Ltwt1981 if I could come and have a look at the setup on yours that would be great. If you could send me a pm with your contact details I will get in touch and organise a time that would be convenient for you. GBMUD
Might a Fairy 5000 not be a better choice? More or less the same design IIRC, probably cheaper, designed for a series and will fit well back between the wings. Or am I mistaken? Steve_M
I suspect you may be right that there would be less complications with the Fairey 5000 and I did also have one of these. Unfortunatley before I really starting thinking about this I sold the Fairey on as from quickly looking at the available space it didn't really appear to fit on the lightweight without some modifications while I thought I could probably fit the 525 with its bumper without any major problems, especially as I thought I would have to get a shaft made up regardless of which option I went for. In hindsight I would probably make a different desicion but I only have the 525 now and it would be nice if could make it work.
