geoffbeaumont
From the school of idle thinking (always a dangerous pastime). Some modern V8s cut fuel to four cylinders when they aren't working hard. Glossing over fundamental issues like why on earth anyone would want to make a lovely V8 sound like a crummy four pot, could you do this with an RV8 given either: 1) Sequential injection or 2) Banked injection, with two channels of four cylinders (assume you can pick any four cylinders for each 'bank') Gut feeling is that it should be possible, but I haven't sat down and worked out whether it can be arranged so that the engine is still balanced. Would dropping every second cylinder in the firing order work? If so it could be done by cutting out one bank of injectors, and should be doable with a bit of coding for the Megasquirt, with no extra hardware... LR90
easy to try with MS, like you say every other might be a good starting point. However with a stock V8 you'll still be compressing air on those unused cylinders (though not injectig fuel) which will sap some power. Ish - it'd require some modifications to the wiring loom if the Megasquirt is just patched into the stop hotwire one. That has one injector bank for each cylinder bank of the V. Extensions long enough to cross to the other bank would probably be a reasonable way to try it out, but the injectors are still a PITA to get at, especially on my truck where the EDIS coils are in the way. However with a stock V8 you'll still be compressing air on those unused cylinders (though not injectig fuel) which will sap some power. No way to avoid that without some form of electronic control of the valves - that would be a major engineering project way, way beyond my abilities (and way beyond what any remotely sane person is ever likely to try). I guess another downside to this is that it'll probably play merry hell with the readings from the EGO sensors, as it'll up the oxygen content of the exhaust gases. On the other hand, probably get just about anything through an MOT that way
